I was feeling masochistic yesterday, so I decided to try to match various Sound Blaster Live! cards I own with installation CDs found on vogonsdrivers and archive.org.
What I was looking for is a 100% smooth install in 98SE with the CD only. No downloading additional drivers or even pointing the installation routine to the location of the proper file. And, of course, the Live! card had to work as it should. You know that there is not a match when, during the install process, an Add New Hardware window like the one below pops up.
In the past, a 100% smooth install has happened only when I used a boxed retail version of a card with the CD that was packaged with it. I had retail CDs for CT4760 and SB0060 but sold the latter.
I figured that among the dozen or so .ISO images on vogonsdrivers and archive.org, I could find a match for my other Live! models (CT4670, CT4780, CT4830, SB0220). The information on vogonsdrivers is not 100% reliable; the description might say that it works with CT4830, for instance, but it didn't with my card.
So, I did a trial and error experiment. I differentiated the CDs by the date of the CD's folders (because some files in the CD's root directory have different dates). For each model, I did a clean OS reimage (98SE) after each failed install, then moved to another CD. You can see how I kept track by crossing off model numbers on each CD:
In the end, after trying about nine different CDs (with different dates for the folders), I could find a match for only one model: CT4670. The folder date for this one is 9/3/98, and I think it is on vogonsdrivers.
If anyone has a CD that 100% came with a Live! model, please post to this thread. Thanks!
