I have probably cracked about 4 or 5 Athlon XP dies since I got into this hobby

The XPs were meant to be toughened up too vs the older thunderbird die... I myself have accidentally crunched two spitfire durons over the years, but no XP or thunderbirds so far touch wood. Weird thing is I've even messed with decapped K6 class and they're not even meant to be bare, and those have lived so far.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

I can most of the time relate. Playing through Baldur's Gate 2 enhanced edition atm and its amazing on my laptop from 2018. You can zoom in and out and most bugs are gone (I think). It is also more accessible, i can sit in the sofa or even outdoors if I like to. Modern mods are also available.

I just got around to trying Diablo II Resurrected, and it's amazing. I was a huge fan of Diablo and Diablo II when they came out. I love it when a developer or publisher does a good and faithful remake of one of their classics. I'm also a huge fan of the Command & Conquer universe of games, and I play around a lot with OpenRA (it also supports Dune 2000). So when Command & Conquer Remastered Collection was released, I jumped on it and have put in many hours on it as well.

On a side not, I discovered a new "retro confession"...

I don't watch much in terms of modern television, except for documentary style shows. I spend a majority of my time watching classics if I watch anything at all. That being said, I do really enjoy seeing retro tech portrayed in television and film of any era, and admit that I often get a kick out of how that tech is portrayed. It's rarely ever accurate, and sometimes it's downright absurd, but it's still fun to see because it give you that quick hit of nostalgia dopamine. 😀

Yes, can relate to that. A few days ago on a whim decided to watch a couple of Star Trek TNG episodes with the family, and a question just popped into everyone's heads: how come everyone is not glued to their smartphone? 🤣

Like you, I don't watch TV a lot at all. Specifically, I try to avoid any modern series, no matter how good friends tell me they are, because with multiple seasons and 10-20 episodes per season they are huge time sinks. By "modern" I probably mean anything 21st century. The only shows I still rewatch are those that I watched as a kid in the nineties.

That's just old age.
Once you're 60+ you'll just put anything on, sit back, and start snoring

I built:
Convert old ASUS ASC boardviews to KICAD PCB!
Re: A comprehensive guide to install and play MechWarrior 2 on new versions on Windows.
Dos+Windows 3.11 auto-install iso template (for vmware)
Script to backup Win9x\ME drivers from a working install
Re: The thing no one asked for: KICAD 440bx reference schematic

Hehe that is cracked me up.

But I doubt my generation will. We don't even have access to linear TV in our home. We only watch what we like... Ok we watch what our wives like most of the time. 😉

yes, that's why for me too. they are just too long, breaking bad long - and due to streaming its all there at once with an uncertain "no longer available" date meaning i can't watch an episode now and then without the (small) risk of the whole lot disappearing.

Having said that free streaming often tends to recycle older series so its not so bad. There isn't anything inherently bad with modern tv series, actually some seem to be really good.

but even then, even committing to 10+ hours of viewing is a bit much. It seemed easier back when it was watching an episode weekly but that doesn't quite explain it either, its just so much time in total. There are quite a few series i watched a few of, even thinking of them as good, and quite happily stopped watching without completing even a season let alone 2 or 3.

I just plugged in an uncooled Athlon Thunderbird 750 just to get POST photos. Granted, it's in a case with a bunch of cooling and the side off, but it still got a little toasty.

I would have cooled it, but I've bought like two different coolers and they both ended up being for SECC2 and so didn't fit.

I'd also add that the number of canceled series are insane so investing time in them is a risk nowadays. I'm not going to start watching a show that gets canceled 2-3 seasons in without a proper closing episode. They did that to me when they canceled SGU in 2010, never again.

Yeah this foolishness needs to end. Mindhunter on Netflix... ☹️

Other dead ends that are good while they last, Sneaky Pete, American Gods, Startup.... I got the "based on" book for mindhunters, it's not nearly as dramatic, bit of a dry recital of events, I was expecting a "Perfect Storm" or "Longitude" type of storytelling.

I don't know man, my father is almost 70 and refuses to stop working while also travelling daily for at least 150+km meeting clients (he can still travel 947km in 14hours for a job), a beast to say the least.
And one day he just casually told me while repairing something "Meh i would probably get bored if i stopped" while inhaling soldering fumes lmao.
I hope i have his genetics even though i noticed getting old is in great part a mental thing.

Confession: I've killed my loved IDT W2A/200 today
Changed it for a Pentium 233 and dropped it accidentally on the tiled flor
I've bought this CPU brandnew in the late 90s to upgrade my single voltage Intel Pluto board.
I am almost in tears now :'(

Building my own PCs since 1991 - for my retro builds it's "no CF-disks, no Floppy emulators, no modern cases etc.", only the real and authentic stuff whenever possible.

Oh my .. Ouch doesn't quite cover this.

Not cheap to replace either just by looking at current prices over on Evilbay, I really feel for you its always sad seeing CPUs like this even more so when they have sentimental value aside from their monetary one.

Oh no, that made me wince. Guess you could get some gold glue and kintsugi it for a display piece. It is said that a Pentium 75 is ideal for nothing, but ideally you would have had one in that system before deciding to put the P233 in.

A confession of sorts from a few months ago, how I mangled a VGA card a couple of decades back Re: Lowend 486 ISA VGA Graphics Quick Test, Mostly Tridents plus Oak, ATI, Tseng ....

I'm sorry for your loss. 🙁

Now hunting for a new one?

i386 16 ⇒ i486 DX4 100 ⇒ Pentium MMX 200 ⇒ Athlon Orion 700 | TB 1000 ⇒ AthlonXP 1700+ ⇒ Opteron 165 ⇒ Dual Opteron 856

TNX for your condolence 😉
Probably not (exept I could get one for a reasonable price) it wouldn't be the same.

Holy shmoly.
Well, I can actually understand the loss, last year I sent my voodoo 2 for repairs to a guy with good feedbacks on amybay and it got stolen, I still got my other og one form the 90s but I was really pissed.
At least you can frame it.
