Got my first aureal, the Diamond Sonic Impact. Going right away to my slot 1 P3. 🤤
Any late 90s games to try?

If you are installing this alongside a Creative Labs card, make sure to install the Aureal drivers *after*, otherwise Creative's a3d.dll will overwrite Aureal's. To get the most benefit out of this card, you will also want to run your games on Windows 98.

Great, I bought a Core2Quad Q9650 on eBay and a Xeon E7-4880V2 was delivered today. I've contacted the seller, let's see what happens.

On-topic, I got a CT4620 + CT4660 in, the Live! 'Gold' version.

The attachment DSC_2419.JPG is no longer available

Very nice. Is that just a standard IDE cable?

Yes, it's a standard 40p IDE/PATA cable. I assume it is the one that is supplied in the box/package.

I thought Compaq used a Q logo. Not sure about this particular Q though, it doesn't look Compaq style enough. 🤔

I think it's this puppy https://theretroweb.com/expansioncards/s/qdi-tvga8900cl

CL should be almost as fast as the 8900D.

Today's arrivals, some nice perforated slot covers. Having all covers on a system equal makes my inner Monk feel satisfaction.

The Roland MT-32 makes me happy, an unwanted 15-core Xeon doesn't.

So the X800XT seems to work fine.... except the DVI port doesn't. I did the usual cleaning with plenty of contacts spray which solved this problem on other cards but the DVI port refused to work. Black screen, but I can load into Windows. I just don't get anything on screen. Maybe something could be broken on the card? Is this a common issue that you folks know? Or should I try again with cleaner/newer cables, more contacts spray?

It is very common for heavier cards to have damaged SMD components near the DVI\VGA ports from my experience. I assume it happens when cards are stacked together or put in a box, the metal back plates from other cards scrape parts off.

The most fragile ones are the little three or four leg inductors (filters), but I believe those are usually just on the VGA pins of the DVI port.

There is an example of this kind of damage on a 6800 Ultra in this thread.

I would start at the DVI port and go over all of the components with a magnifier and good lighting. Hopefully it is just a damaged surface mount component.

Also, have you tried a DVI to VGA adapter on that port? It uses a totally different signal path, but it would be worth checking, just in case.

Now for some blitting from the back buffer.

Good Idea! I will try with a DVI to VGA adapter. And I will take a pic of the DVI area. To be honest the card was stored in a cardboard box on its own and is in pristine condition. I think it's more probable that components blew up rather than being shaved off the card.

This kind of damage is also common when cards are stored directly on top of each other. The tiny ceramic capacitors directly under the CPU die can become caught between the metal fins if another card and will easily crush or sheer off.

See here for some photos of this.

Bought 2 286 boards.
One does post (3x ic chipset) - https://theretroweb.com/motherboards/s/leadma … inc-lm-103fs-16

The other does not (HT12 chipset) - ??? no idea which one it is but can you spot "what's wrong with this picture"? (placebo quote)
Probably this one: https://theretroweb.com/motherboards/s/lucky-star-cm-286ghs

Heh, KBC in the 287 socket. Did you notice that after it didn't POST ? Or it doesn't POST with it put in the right place? There's a possibility that chip is toast now, you could try it with only 512kb in and the KBC out altogether. Also some boards do nothing without a battery on the header, and some do nothing until you bridge the keylock switch.

[seller's pics]

Arrived today.
KBC does work indeed. Tested in 2 other 286 boards.
BIOS stops at 03, but on the other 2 POSTs pretty well.
Clock chip works too.

Probably I just have to restore all the corroded traces and it's good to go. Lucky me I guess.

Edit: BIOS isn't its own, someone stuck 2 chips for the Octek Fox ii 286 and not Lucky Star CM-286GHS.
Also, BIOS version is newer than the one on TRW, I'll have to upload the images. Cool! 😀

Finally bought a PS/2 bracket for my Pentium MMX setup. I'm trying to install all possible options on its HOT-569 mobo.

The attachment 20241122_231215.jpg is no longer available

I hate to do this but I had to buy it brand new. It is quite difficult to find such parts second-hand...

/me love my P200MMX@225 Mhz + Voodoo Banshee + SB Live! + Sound Canvas SC-55ST = unlimited joy !

Make sure to double check the pinout on the motherboard before installing. Pinouts on PS/2 adapters are not standard.

Oh yes absolutely, in any case the header on the mobo is 1 x 3 and the bracket came with a 2 x 5 molex as seen in the picture, so it would not even fit.

This reminds me of the awful unkeyed 1x4 USB connectors. If you plug it in the wrong way around, it shorts your motherboard to ground.
