Grabbed this Chieftec Dragon (Antec). It has some scuff marks but what do you expect for an old case. It comes with a Gigabyte GA-M52S-S3P with a AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ in it but I'm going to swap it with a Asus Maximus II Formula with some OCZ Reaper HPC Edition DDR2 and running a Q9650.

Nice! A couple years ago I was lucky to find the Antec version of that case at a thrift store for like $10 or $15 and included a motherboard, CPU and RAM. I stuffed it with a high end socket 775 multi GPU system, and there's still a ton of room in the case. It's massive!

Make sure to double check the pinout on the motherboard before installing. Pinouts on PS/2 adapters are not standard.

Rewiring done.

The pinout on the mobo is as follows:

1 - Data = Brown
2 - Empty
3 - Ground = Red
4 - Vcc = Green
5 - Clock = Yellow

This one cost me $80. It was sitting on eBay for a couple of weeks. The seller didn’t put under the vintage category so I guess no one noticed it was there. Glad you put a 775 in it as well. What GPU did you pair it with?

Lovely case.

You might get a kick out of this email a friend got from OCZ support back in the day.

Thank you.

I always think of the comment "prime 95 generally stresses our memory out too much" whenever someone brings up OCZ. 🤣 what garbage.

Good stuff! It never ceases to amaze me how random these pinouts are. I just rewired a similar one, except with VCC and ground on the end pins, and data and clock on the middle pins. 🙃

A few thrift store finds today.

Late 90s or early 2000s (?) beige Antec case. Other than a few minor scuffs and scratches, it's in really good shape. Not sure what's installed in it; I'll find out that out when I do a tear down.

Also found four NOS beige Keytronic PS/2 keyboards. They were all still in the original plastic complete with manuals and order forms.

And these Yamaha YST-M15 speakers with the original adapter.

And while not thrift store related, my CRT Terminator card arrived. 😁

I had these speakers back in the day! Your picture triggered many good memories. As "PC speakers" went in that era, I remember them fondly (though, you know, nostalgia-colored glasses and all that)..

That's good to know! 😀

I have the Yamaha YST-M10 speakers, but have never used the YST-M15 speakers before.

love those classic yamaha speakers, used to see them everywhere, real nostalgic for me as most of the computers at my seniors school had them some 25yrs ago, remember a classmate telling me he needed some speakers, he then brazenly unplugged the speakers from the class computer and put them in his rucksack.🤣. he didnt even try to be sly about it.

So I tried even more to revive the x850xtpe. I can't see any visible damage on the card. I've inspected also under the heatsink and everything seems fine. I tried pressing on the memory chips and nothing has happened. I also tried pressing together the pcb at random spots where possible hoping to spot a smd thats only partially working but the artifact pattern didn't change at all. https://imgur.com/a/vonrDqN Many have suggested it might be a dead core. 🙁

Probably more like broken solder joints or ripped pads. Nothing a reball can't fix.

I think we've all done the press randomly and hope.

It's not very effective.

Nor is the fry it at 250c for 10 mins.

You're going to need tools, time, and patience if you really want to fix it.

Start with a multimeter and some datasheets.

Do the transistors have a normal looking output voltage? (Eg ~3.3, 2.5, 1.8v)

Do the chips get a normal looking voltage on their enable pin?

Edit, just looked at the pic.
It's practically certainly memory related.
Nvidia has mats/mods that can run a memtest to isolate which chip.
There are similar tools for amd.
Once you isolate the chip, look for bad caps and resistors around it. Look for bad traces.
If nothing looks bad, it is either the memory chip (not too hard to replace), or the core (much harder to reball)

I built:
Convert old ASUS ASC boardviews to KICAD PCB!
Re: A comprehensive guide to install and play MechWarrior 2 on new versions on Windows.
Dos+Windows 3.11 auto-install iso template (for vmware)
Script to backup Win9x\ME drivers from a working install

Bought a Xeon E5450 SLBBM and an LGA771 to LGA775 adapter because of the Core2Quad not being delivered. If it works, a TDP of 80W still is more desirable than 95W. Yes, I have to put a positive spin on this for now.

Tdp is only at full speed. Idle is lower.

If you're really going for low power underclock to the slowest bus, and ram. Then look at voltages.

GPU stabbing looks something very hard to grasp. And it doesn't look like there are very good guides out there. And I probably need to start with something more basic. I haven't studied electronics at all in school. What I can do however, is replace stuff that looks broken, at random, and hope for the best. I actually got a WEP 858D Hot Air just last week. I was told it's great for hobbists. Thoughts? I can still return it. Also got silicone mat, wicks, leaded solder 63/37 of 3 sizes. I need flux that doesn't cost a fortune (surprisingly hard to find a good deal. top brands are 50$ for tiny syringes which is crazy to me) and a microscope. As with flux, I can't seem to find a good microscope that doesn't cost a fortune.

Am I missing a resistor here, or is it just not populated on my card?

You would see little craters if a component has been ripped off, not little domes of solder.

Ordered some new push-pins for socket 775/1150/1155 Intel branded heatsinks to replace a few weak and broken ones, they arrived last night. Have 2 Heatsinks that need a few replacements.

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun
