Hey Everyone,
Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, if so just let me know and I'll move it (I'm new here).
I recently picked up an old Socket 7 Gateway 2000 machine for some classic windows/DOS gaming and it's been a lot of fun getting it working and upgrading it. It's so so close to what I want but I'm having some issues with the sound in DOS games. I picked up an SC-88vl for MIDI and that's been mind blowing but here's where the issue I have starts. The PC has an onboard Soundblaster Vibra 16 which works great for sound effects but it unfortunately has the hanging note bug when playing through the Sound Canvas (Also basically every game on the list of bugged games are ones I put this PC together for). I picked up a SoundBlaster Live! PCI card and stuck that in and it fixed the hanging note bug, the Sound Canvas now sounds amazing in Duke3d and Heretic etc. but after anywhere from 5-10 minutes into playing, the Live! card just flat out stops playing sound effects until I reboot, only in DOS mode, the Card still plays sounds in windows just fine. They just stop and don't start again until the computer restarts. I've gone into the Duke 3d setup after the sound drops and I get a DMA error using the exact same settings that worked before the sound dropped out. I've tried different PCI slots to no avail, different settings like mono vs stereo, different sample rates, different sound blaster options but the problem persists no matter what.
So my questions to y'all as an absolute noob here are:
1)Can I use the Live! Card for Midi only and the Onboard card for SFX? If so, I couldn't figure that out so any insight would be amazing (Windows DOS mode, not Pure DOS)
2)Is there any way to solve the Hanging Note bug?
3)Is the problem with the Live! card dropping sound common? Is there a solution?
4)Should I just buy a new Sound Card and if so which one would be best to use with the SC-88vl connected through gameport?
Other Info that might be helpful:
Windows 98se
Running games through Windows DOS, not big kid DOS
Voodoo 3 Also in a PCI slot (Overkill I know but it was cheaper than a 2)
Onboard Sound Disabled in BIOS when using Live! card
Losing sound in all DOS games with Live! (Duke 3d/Dark Forces/Chex Quest etc) Seemingly not game specific
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can bring to the table here. This has been a months endeavor and I feel like I'm almost at the end.
