Notice: AGS Archives is shutting down!
« on: 01 Feb 2018, 21:18 »
The time has come where I no longer have the energy, time nor interest in continuing work on AGSA, so as of today I'm officially announcing that AGSA is shutting down.
If you've relied on your game being hosted on AGSA it is important that you download your games and find another place to host them!

I will no longer update the database with any new games released effective immediately,
and the service will go offline by the end of the year or when the current library is fully available on archive.org, whichever comes first.

What about MAGSAN?
For now I'll continue releasing a new issue every month, but instead of adding the games to AGSA and linking to those pages,
the newsletter (as you may have noticed in the latest issue) will link to the AGS db page or forum post of the games instead.

The site is still up, so the content has apparently not been transferred to the Wayback Machine yet.

I've never understood why people give up their lifetime projects.
While I surely understand that they need a break or change in life at some point, there must be other ways..

People's interests and priorities change over time.
Look at it from this perspective - I didn't really have an interest in vintage computers (and now I'm talking 386 and earlier) until a couple of years ago.
Prior to that, I had other interests.
Similarly, I recently collected some vintage hardware from a fellow collector who is now in his late 70's and decided it was time to move on.

EDIT: However, I also understand your point - in a case such as this, maybe reach out to the community and see if anyone else isn't perhaps interested in taking over the helm. Otherwise, the only other alternative is probably to archive everything.

Yeah, but maybe he could hand it over to someone else? Maybe someone else wants to pick the project up and continue it.

vogons people to the rescue ? Or some other forum ? I mean after all, some times it is important to preserve and save. Just like what we did when it came to vogonsdrivers , that started out as me and other either collecting or uploading the drivers. I mean where there is a will there is a way.

I pinged ArchiveTeam and they ran a site backup, should be in Wayback upon the next time Archive.org absorbs their imports.

That's taking the bull by the horns! Of course, you realize that now VOGONS will now be blamed for the "premature demise" of AGS Archives since no good deed goes unpunished.

It will be interesting to see if the site is still accessible as is or if it just gets rolled up into one tarball for convenient download.

Indeed, I am damned if I do and damned if I don't.

However, it seems I spoke too early and their initial grab didn't grab *everything* so they'll be trying again sometime soon.
