Chris' 3d Benchmark was designed as a replacement for the (now outdated) 3dbench. Chris' 3d Benchmark runs in 32-bit pmode, has support for VGA and 640x480x256 SVGA, has microsecond timing accuracy, and uses a rotating 3d enviroment mapped object as the basis for the benchmark. I believe it to be a very good overall representation of how well any given computer will run today's modern software.

I think we should plan for a larger project simular to Phils ultimate VGA benchmark.
Lets choose ~10 Windows 9x benchmarks mixing CPU, 2D and 3D graphics.
Perhaps ~5 games or so as well.

It would be great to have a huge database with performance numbers for different platforms with different CPUs and video cards.
Windows 9x cover everything from fast 386* systems to "Optimal Windows 9x builds" with late P4 or Athlon XP CPUs

This time I think we should start of with a "test period" where some of us idiots with lots of time for these things could test the benchmark suite on a few systems.
This way we can see which benchmarks work well and which do not work well and so on before people start submitting results and the benchmark suite gets "finalized".

*Or perhaps late 486 / early Pentium depending on the benchmarks.

These are some tests that I would like to see included in the benchmark suite.
I think this suite should be rather large but that certain tests are needed to get a combined score.

A PCmark suite. 2002 is the oldest I think.
Not all slow systems will be able to run it but its a given for the systems that can.

Great idea! I see there are quite a few benchmarks I haven't tried yet... Will you make another Google Docs spreadsheet for this, when you finish the benchmark package?

I also had the idea once of using Fractint as benchmark tool. We could make a preset to render, say, a 2048x1536 fractal image and see how long that takes on different systems. Since the image can be rendered directly to RAM instead of the screen, this would make a good raw CPU/RAM benchmark, independent of the graphics card. Fractint uses integer math by default, but can be configured to use floating-point for certain fractal types, so FPU performance can be measured, too.

I'd really like someone else to do the Windows stuff. On this one I'd prefer to sit back, learn, test, bench and contribute 😀

Ideally I would like one big ZIP archive. And inside all the Installers. I'd like to avoid having a ZIP inside a ZIP, especially those self-extracting archives.

We also need to put some essentials on there such as DirectX and anything else that might be needed?
