Some nice Hi-res (16 color) DOS games:
Dokyusei (1992, ELF)
(Pictured above is the PC-98 version; the DOS version is more or less the same)
The Incredible Machine & Sid and Al's Incredible Toons(1993, Dynamix)
Welltris (1989, Spectrum Holobyte)
I just remembered Terminal Velocity was gorgeous and ran pretty well on a fast 486.
The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

Wow... There's a lot of beautiful DOS games.
In general, Japanese games made good use of bitmaps, but there were games that were comparable to Western ones.

I just happen to know a lot of beautiful looking DOS games. But I played very few of them (lol)
I feel like that Sam & Max: Hit the Road is one of the best looking adventure games of all time and the best looking LucasArts adventure game released on DOS.
I played Sam & Max a few days ago; it was okay but I felt it was too short and had a bland ending.
Speaking of cyberpunk-themed games, Rise of the Dragon comes to mind. The EGA version's color palette makes the cyberpunk feeling more real.
(Pic related is EGA version)

I second that, Sam and Max was wonderfully drawn. There even was a cartoon show on VHS in the mid-90s with the same animation style as the intro, I think.
Rise of the Dragon is also superb. It's on par with Snatchers and Beneath a Steel Sky, I think. All three are great cyber-punk adventures, also.
I think there are some really nice ones more of this kind.
From ca. '86/'87 onwards, I think. Have to check Moby Games..

Don't you mean The Adventures of Sam & Max: Freelance Police? That came out in '97.

Ah yes, Elf games. The Ecchi/Hentai variety. xD
The first Dokyusei screenshot really reminds me of Dragon Knight III, better know as Knights of Xentar on PC in the west. With it's "3D" mode that simply tilted the playing field slightly. When I see what they want on Ebay for the Big Box game, I could hit myself for destroying all my boxes at the end of the 90's when I was running out of space, only keeping the Jewel Cases...
I didn't read the whole thread but my picks for 486 VGA are:
-Settlers 2 gold (or even Settlers in SVGA mode, which is 640x480)
-The cut scenes from Burntime (decent game too)
-Star Control II
-NOMAD (Papyrus) - TBH a bit too jagged gameplay graphics like Stunts which came out 3 years before it, but the alien art is nice
-Spacewrecked (for when it came out)
-Syndicate
-Dune/Dune II
-Transport Tycoon
-Alien Breed - Tower Assault
-Crystalis (NES) on NESticle (cheating a bit there but feasible)
-Spellcasting 101
-Later leisure suit larrys (4-6, Love for sail)
-Pirates! Gold
-Monkey Island
-Heroes of Might and Magic II (even the first one is not graphically bad)
-Star Trek - A Final Unity (IIRC that DID run on my DX2/66 back in the day)
-Civ 2 (might be pushing it)
-Total Annihilation (Technically needs a P75, I wonder if it would run on a 5x86-133 - really pushing that one!)

Don't forget The Incredible Machine 2 - a great upgrade to the original.

I like the graphics of LSL 2 and 3 more than LSL 5~7. It's due to the color palette.
Plus the graphics in LSL 6 aren't good.
LSL 2 + 3 EGA-Gfx and MT-32 Music are awesome!
Retro-Gamer 😀 ...on different machines
According to the readme file, Star Trek Deep Space Nine - Harbinger works on a 486 DX2/66MHz. Though I cannot confirm if it really runs on 486...

Star Trek The Next Generation - A Final Unity also looks good, btw:

It requires a 80486DX, according to the readme.

Nice graphix there
I have another selection of MS-DOS graphics for y'all
Mega Man X (1995, Capcom)
Discworld (1995, Dro Soft)
Dragonsphere (1994, Microprose)
Earthworm Jim (1995, Shiny Entertainment, Inc.)
Shufflepuck Cafe (1989, Broderbund)
Speaking of retro-style video games, does anyone know Thimbleweed Park?
The creators of Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island worked on that game.
The aesthetic of the game is the closest we'll ever get to the classic DOS VGA game style
The graphical style is basically a cross between Maniac Mansion/Zak McKracken and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. It resembles the FM Towns versions of Zak McKracken and Loom too.
The interface is basically Day of the Tentacle + Fate of Atlantis
Ripley's Believe It or Not!: The Riddle of Master Lu
Easily one of the games that did not get the attention deserved. Very nice looking, lengthy and interesting, a must-play for every adventure games' fan.
TFX had a different (more realistic?) look than other simulators.
I have traveled across the universe and through the years to find Her.
Sometimes going all the way is just a start...

I think it shares that trait with EF2000; they both aged incredibly well, although I doubt EF2000 would run well on even a fast 486..
Floor 13 is one.
