The motherboard database is accessible at https://theretroweb.com/
This project was known under the former names of Ultimate Retro and Ultimate Hardware 2019 up until the recent merger with the other board archival project made by Zago, and it will be focusing on the resurrection of the well known Total Hardware 1999 database and bringing it back in the 21st century.
Features
Unlike the many TH99 clones out there, this version adds some much needed features:
- an advanced search engine: you can look up items on various categories, like chipset name, number of expansion slots, etc.)
- user contributions: you can help expand the database with better photos, BIOS images, user manuals and even new motherboards!
- scalable UI: the website will render across a large range of screens (smartphones, tablets, laptops, desktops, etc.)
More about TH99
Total Hardware 1999 was made using a version of Micro House Technical Library (MTL), an encyclopedia CD offered with some magazines in the 90's. TH99 copied this information from MTL and converted it to html format. MTL was bought by Support Source in the late 90's and it was incorporated in their software. At the moment, there are five MTL versions known to exist (If there are newer versions and/or you know more about this software, please let us know; some info can be found here):
- the 1995 demo (offered with a magazine, very little content)
- v1.4 from July 1997 (4671 motherboards)
- v1.51 from January 1998 (5518 motherboards)
- Q4 1998 (6444 motherboards)
- Q1 1999 (5332 motherboards)
Initially, Deksor generated the boards database from a TH99 copy (which proved to be a bad idea, lost some info in the conversion), and we are planning to do any further conversions from MTL directly (this is why this software is so important for us).
Up until the public BETA which came in August 2020, the team was composed of a few people:
- code side (user interface, backend): Deksor, computerguy08 (me), scorp
- content side (adding/editing boards): evasive, mr_Slug, Carlos S.M.
We are planning to add many more features in the future.
If you would like to contribute to the project, feel free to join us on Discord (link is above ^^).
What if we combined the versatility of stason with the cleanness of TH99 ?
Something that would look like this, with a modern interface suitable for smartphones as well.
I made this prototype today (had some fun coding in HTML and CSS).
A search bar would be included as well.
