Is there any way to get S/PDIF optical to work with these sound cards ?
I would like to mod one like Phil did to his Sound Blaster.

Anyone know the pin out on this card ?
I see there are S/PDIF in connections but which are the S/PDIF out connections ?
Is it possible to solder some leads to this board and get S/PDIF out to work ?
I see there is a 5v connection so all you need to do is find the ground and digital signal connections.
That would make this card highly desirable to get S/PDIF to work in DOS.

On some sound cards as well as on many laptops, the 3.5 mm mini-jack line-out connector also doubles as an optical S/PDIF output. You can tell by the red light coming out of the port if S/PDIF out is enabled in the software mixer settings. Have you checked this?

YMF7x4 has SPDIF 48 kHz locked. Its activation must run via specific DSP register(s). DOS driver does NOT this. WIN driver does. And if you run Windows then restart in MS-DOS mode SPDIF will be active till the moment when you press "reset" or power button. But if you power on and start MS-DOS without Windows session the SPDIF shouldn't be active. If I'm wrong please correct me.

No, this card has not digital output in 3,5 mm jack. Look at left-top side, this is SPDIF out (must be it). Find signal line and which contact on the right-top side is connected to it. Probably you'll find working signal.

There is no such signal for output.

Yes. Can be added. See below.

No it is not so simple that. It needs to be created. Some little bit more work needed. Actually this card is pretty good starting point for such hacks.

In order to get digital output, begin with that Sigmatel chip. Seems to be DAC. Which signals are around there? get the LRCLK, MCLK, SDATA, SCLK signals found and connect some digital audio transmission converter (CS8406 or something) with that in parallel, which is configured as slave for communication. Then You can have the choice to have as S/PDIF, AES/EBU, TOSLINK or all at the same time. 😉

M-audio Delta cards I modified too to get 5 digital outputs from that multicard. This way all the cards with dedicated serial data DAC-based cards can be modified.
But sorry , no videos about it, I am really not into fancy videos or pictures. Schematics only.

And about sample rates there are also those which can do the conversion in hardware too... if needed.

newly made SB-clone ...with 24bit and AES/EBU... join in development!

I don't have one of these cards lying around to play with but if someone can figure this out and make a diagram of what connections are needed to connect a s/pdif bracket
in order to get tos-link out to work I would greatly appreciate it.

I plan on purchasing some of these cards in the future.

From what I see on this card is both S/PDIF connectors are in and not out. The picture I looked at wasn't very clear but the S/PDIF out on the YMF744 chip looks like it does not have a trace. I will look at an actual card tomorrow with magnifier visor and confirm.

Well, I found a better photo and the output does have a trace that goes to the missing top left connector pad. I cannot tell if it goes to top right connector pad from the photo. It looks like the CD Digital In uses the S/PDIF input. I will still look and real card and verify.

If you don't have someone of these cards and want to get it with S/PDIF interface why don't you just looking for the model with COAX/TosLink connector soldered already? What is this topic for? Do you want to buy a card without S/PDIF and then solder it??? 😀

Is there a Yamaha YMF-7xx with Tos-link connector ? I don't know of one that is why I would like to add one to this card and so It will work in DOS.

What is "TTL" ?

I think this is all the connections you need.

TTL – "transistor-transistor logic", its amplitude is up to 5 volts.
Coax is the same signal like TTL but 0,5–1,0v max amplitude.

And I don't think so, you have shown digital in, not out.

I was considering add an S/PDIF bracket with tos-link connector attached.
Digital out is where pin #74 leads in photo.

I ordered some Rabberry Pi wires and S/PDIF back plate brackets. I will let you know how it turns out. I want to mod my Turtle Beach cards and Aureal Vortex and SB-live-5.1
My AV reviever supports TOS-link connections and Dolby Pro Logic so I can at least emulate 7.1 surround sound with these sound cards.
