I got a a MSI HETIS 865GV-E with celeron D 2.8gHz
https://www.msi.com/Desktop/Hetis_865GV ... e/Overview
This machine has only 1 2 pci slots but 1 slot is broken.
For the video card, installed a Diamond Stealth III S540 32MB.
The board feature intel Extreme Graphics 2. For win98SE games, this IGP will works well?
I have a pci voodoo 2000 and banshee but the machine is hot a lot.

Retro rig 1: Asus CUV4X, VIA c3 800, Voodoo Banshee (Diamond fusion) and SB32 ct3670.
Retro rig 2: Intel DX2 66, SB16 Ct1740 and Cirrus Logic VLB.

The IGP might actually be faster than the Savage 4 you installed. In any case, the difference between the two in performance probably won't be great.

The i865gv-e is a faster i845gv which is a really good retro-igp.
The DOS compatibility is excellent. The features are good (s3tc).
I had an issue with "soldier of fortune", the framerate is shortly extremly low while shoot an enemy and displaying a sort of flashlight. I can't figure out what causes this.
Another thing is that there was no fullscreen in Win2k for Crack-Remakes (remakes.org).

I gonna try with v3 2000. I will add some extra cooling in the case.A pci fan blower like this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Case-System-Exhaust- … r/dp/B0043QUS7W.
Also, the P4 prescott are unlocked? The bios has option to change fsb/voltage but for celron D is locked. Maybe putting a underclocked p4 will help to lower the heat.
For DOS the on board sound (ac97 crap) features sb digital voices and the MS GM. Teste with warcrfat 1 and 2, DOOM 2 and Dark forces. In dark forces only sfx sound worked. For 3d games with S4, UT and half-life blue shift at 640x 480. Both worked fine.

Retro rig 1: Asus CUV4X, VIA c3 800, Voodoo Banshee (Diamond fusion) and SB32 ct3670.
Retro rig 2: Intel DX2 66, SB16 Ct1740 and Cirrus Logic VLB.

there are no unlocked p4 processors, all are multiplier locked, in many motherboards you can change fsb and voltage, it has nothing to do with being locked. being a prescott, it may feature speedstep, that way you can lower the multiplier, but still that computer should not be that hot.

The case is very compact just a very small lateral fan. even the ram has heatsink.
Also the IGP from that time are based on Intel old video card?

Try P4 Nothwood. They are really much cooler without noticeable loss of performance.

I am using a P4 with a C100-Futro. It's a 800Mhz FSB that the machine clocks down to 400Mhz.
So instead of 2,4Ghz I only have 1,2Ghz and therefore much less TDP. (should be half so ca. 30 Watts !

Today tested games with daemon tools. The audio streamed from the iso gets some stuter. Also the windows starting music gets stuter. I gonna try with the intel igp and pci sound card.
My options for cards are:
sb live 4670´model with gold plated conector
Ensoniq audio pci
Aureal vortex 1
I found infos about the igp

That stuttering sound within win9x is a problem my solo1 with wdm-drivers has too in that FSC-C100 (i845gv) machine.
Also some strange noises whithin unreal-engine-games are clearly audible. I'll have to do some more testing.
The extreme-gfx is still fine for retro. It can take the advantage of jazz2 640x400@8bit with the stutterung-free scrolling.

I would check DMA for harddisks first.

In the bios just have the option to assign IRQ for PNP or ISA ( the mobo dont have any ISA slots. Already changed and still the issue.
I disabled the serial and Print ports.
The "universal" driver on realtek site ( ver. 4.06) dont work.
Also the extreme graphics is just a powered vrsion of Intel 710?

Speaking about DMA, I meant checking in Windows "device manager" for hdd/controller. Also make sure that last "Intel Inf" package is installed for this chipset.

Those PNP/ISA options in BIOS (in my opinion) are just for reserving resources not to be automatically assigned to PCI devices. Setting them to 'ISA' prevents assignment.

Extreme Graphics 2 (embeeded in i865G) is next step in their "slow" evolution of graphics chips i740->i815->i845->i865

SFX: Sb irq:5 DMA:1
Music: General MIDI: 330
Tested Descent 2. In game music works
Legend of Kyrandia 2: Only MIDI music.
Tyrian 2000: only MIDI music

Removed S4 pro and put a Aureal vortex 1. No more stutters even using daemon tools. Starcraft no more stuter and mcuh better than ac97
Now another Problem: No driver for SB emulation I got the Error n. 6
EDIT after updating with intel chipset drivers from Phils and messing around the bios, i got sb emulation.
