Ok, I copied this from list from Stiletto's original Glide list at:
DOS Glide Games List

That version was to find all the DOS games that had Glide support. This one will be only for Windows games that had specific Windows-Glide support (as opposed to Direct 3D or OpenGL).

Will update/correct as time goes by...

I did not know there were so many Glide games.

Be aware that there a probably a bunch of older titles that are actually Direct3D/OpenGL (no specific Glide support) in the list. Sometimes you'll find data on a game saying it's "Glide" or "3dfx" when it actually support D3D or OGL.

Primary reason for that is the 3dfx card was the only card that performed 3D acceleration well at the time. Kind of like calling a soda a "Coke".

By no means is that list complete, either. And it included DOS Glide games too (unless Nicht filtered all the known ones out...) I compiled it from 1. Moody's Voodoo2 FAQ, 2. Searching for "requires Glide", "requires 3dfx", and other miscellaneous derivations of those phrases using Google and Google Groups, which took a while, 3. an old archive of 3dfx.com archived by The Wayback Machine (http://www.archive.org), which listed current and upcoming Windows or DOS games that used Glide. I still don't believe it to be complete. But sorting out from this list which ones were D3D/OpenGL only, and which ones were for DOS, and which ones are incorrect listings, and which ones did use Glide in DOS or Windows, what version of Glide they require (Glide2 or Glide3?), etc. - that still needs done. To my original lists too - please resurrect them and edit them as Nicht has in the past. By no means, consider it dead...

And consider all the games and demos made by lone programmers, screensavers, demos of games that were never published by computer game publishers, technology demos from 3dfx... there's quite a LOT I haven't listed.

I for one would like to see the original technology demos supported from 3dfx - as here: http://www.falconfly.de/artwork.htm
Like my old favorite, "Grand Bleu..." Nicht used to have done some testing of these.

As mentioned before, this may require the (illegal) acquisition of the Arcade Toolbox SDK - talk to the x3dfx guys, maybe they have it: http://x3dfx.da.ru/

Or it may be impossible if the demo actually wants to talk to the registers of the card, etc. Or if it wants to set SST settings in a batch file. Or something. I dunno. Anyhow, what better way to prove/improve compatibility of OpenGlide than running the original Voodoo1 and Voodoo2 demos? 😀

Great info, if we could do a real database with all info like Glide2 or Glide3 support, DOS or Windows and how much it work it would be great.....

That's exactly what I did. We already have a GliDOS candidate thread. Like the title says, this is the "Glide-for-Windows game list"

I also removed titles that had no Glide support, IE: BLOOD2, which had software or Direct3D modes only.

FYI:

F22 Total Air War (also f22 ADF) by DID supports D3D. Judging from screen shots though, glide looked better.

Rowans's Mig Alley, Flying Corps Gold are D3D only.

M1 Abrahams 2 supported both glide & D3D.

I'm pretty sure that the 3d accelaeration for Flight Unlimted was for another chipset (rendition most likely).

Well, Flight Unlimited is a DOS-only game in any case. 😜

I had a copy of the accelerated .exe. Pretty sure in the readme it had to be run in windows (like ef2000 and the 3dfx upgrade).

Nothing, but it has with the topic (although it is kinda pointless for OpenGlide, why would someone use a OpneGL2Glide2OpenGL wrapper) McLeod's work is impressive.

That list is too long, as a lot of those games had/have superior OpenGL/DirectX Support.

Ultimate race Pro
Motorhead
DethKarz

are just a few that spring to mind.

These don't need Glide support as they look and run better in DirectX.

Welp, that's one of the reasons that we need people to test some of these games and begin filtering out the list. (Man would a Wiki system ever be good right now.)

Realize that some of this is going to come down to opinion.

A good example is this:
http://www.geocities.com/k_lupinsky/index.htm

I definitely prefer the Direct3D version, but Snover rightfully pointed out the bizarre lighting (entire forest is brightly and evenly lit).

For now, we need to stick with removing only titles that have no specific Glide support.

Will draw some kind of consensus about comparisons later.

That link is for a really old D3D software rendering, NOT modern accelerated D3D rendering.

Realize that some of this is going to come down to opinion

Riiiighht, So you're telling me that , lets say the 3 i mentioned, look better in glide than they do in modern day D3D ?

Ultimate race Pro has a new-ish patch that enables me to play at 1280x960 with 4x FSAA and 64tap filtering.

Motorhead has a V3.1 unofficial patch that enables me to use a 1600x1200x32 res, 2x FSAA, and 32tap filtering, and looks awesome.

DethKarz - see above.

These are just a few examples of where GLide is NOT needed.
Same for Unreal.
Why anybody in their right mind would run Unreal in Glide is beyond me.
Unreal has had major OpenGL and D3D patches, with a newer OpenGL patch that enables S3TC and the use of Hi-res Textures from Unreal Tournament. Glide just pales in comparison.

Eh? Did you even look at the page? It has three pictures, left-to-right: Software Rendering, Glide, then Direct3D. The Direct3D rendering requires a 3D accelerator, so it's not "software".

Unless, of course, you have some "unofficial" patch that the rest of us aren't aware of...

If you go back and you still can't see them, then frames are "broken" on your browser.

Riiiighht, So you're telling me that , lets say the 3 i mentioned, look better in glide than they do in modern day D3D ?

I didn't say any such thing. The Mechwarrior example I gave you is what I said.

Good to hear.

Actually, there a number of people who are having difficulties running these games outside of Glide. Apparently some cards (certain ATI and Matrox models) just don't work properly with Direct3D or OpenGL. In some cases quality and speed both went up.

Mind you, these are mostly people who have older 3D cards. While buying a new card is the best (and most obvious) solution, some people just don't have that as an option.

But if these Matrox and ATI cards have trouble running these games in naitive OpenGL, what chance do they have in running them in a simulated Glide environment that relies heavily on OpenGL ?
If these cards have poor opengl drivers, then surely they will run into just as much trouble with OpenGlide ?

I re-visited that site, and although it may be D3D accelerated, it's still not a modern day D3D.
It is a D3D version from 1998, which would of been DirectX5.
And DX5 lacked many features, and I'll agree that if you can only get that version then Glide would be the better option.

But many of those games have DX6/7 versions now, and , like I said, look superior.

I would edit that list for you, and put comments next to them about patches and stuff. But I bet you'll edit my post and wipe it all 😜

*shrug* Ask them. My guess would be an either/or situation: might be OK with one, but not the other (Direct3D/Open GL).

It's a strange thing. The bizarre part is that it's apparently still going on for newer titles like "Return to Castle Wolfenstein"
(thanks to Zorbid for the link)
http://www.emutalk.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8496

If it's Direct-X5 it's not going to automatically look better under Direct-X 6,7,or 8. It would need a patch (or more likely a source port) to take advantage of the newer features of Direct-X 6/7/8.

Unless you know of some kind of patch/remake/whatever it's going to look the same.

...I would edit that list for you, and put comments next to them about patches and stuff. But I bet you'll edit my post and wipe it all

It's not like you typed it up yourself. You simply copied Stiletto's list and my long-winded reply to it. I had already started a list for this purpose and there wasn't much sense having duplicate threads.

That list is too long, as a lot of those games had/have superior OpenGL/DirectX Support.

Listing which is superior is not the point of this list. Listing what games had Glide support in Windows, and which ones ADDITIONALLY supported other 3D API's somehow, is. (And removing the games which for sure did not support Glide is, as well.)

Here's the big point:
OpenGlide needs a list of games for testing. IF one game has a D3D patch or OpenGL patch as well as a Glide patch, or it could support them all, IT DOESN'T MATTER which is better.

Theoretically, we should be trying to get OpenGlide working with ALL Glide games, regardless of whether or not there is a better patch for certain games. The more games it supports, the more of a chance any fixes will carry over to any/all other Glide games. So yes, that means testing

Perhaps there should be a list of games that have such patches, or a list that says that using a certain 3d API with a certain game is better, but THIS LIST IS NOT THAT. Craig, I'm sorry bud, but you missed the point of this list completely. And perhaps others have as well.

Note that it is handy to know IF a different patch to a different 3D API exists, strictly for comparison testing. But with this list, we don't want to ask which is BETTER. Yes, no one in their right mind should be running Unreal in Glide anymore (as well as other games), but for testing a wrapper? As many functions should work as possible, and if Unreal implements a Glide function that's unimplemented, or provides a good testing environment for debugging another one, THAT's what's important. In other words, we're not in our "right minds" when we're testing a wrapper. Theoretically, EVERYTHING should work with it. So if some mutant wants to run Unreal in Glide, he COULD. Why he wants to or whether he's aware of the other 3D APIs is not important.

All these arguments are moot, although some of it is indeed useful information (such as Tanyrhiew's posts - thanks!)

Also note: it's best to double-check such info as Tanyrhiew's posts anyhow - if you didn't have a Voodoo card, perhaps you didn't know a Glide patch exists. *shrug*
