Anyone here played WoW on a Voodoo 5? How does that wok? Apparently that's doable- though I don't know about newer patches.

I better skip the MMORPG's, way too addictive L O L!

I can't see that happening. WoW has light system requirements but not that light. The minimum specs says a DX9 card at the least. (Radeon9500/9600/9700/9800 or nVidia FX). You'd be missing too much trying to play it with a Voodoo 5. That's a big gap between DX6 and DX9. I don't think 3D Analyze would even be able to fill in the blanks.

The original vanilla WoW could be played on a Voodoo 5 with software emulation of TnL and it was actually quite smooth.
With all the patches and stuff right now... I'd say it'd be quite difficult.
The original WoW used to have as a minimum requirement a GeForce 2.

Umm... I do have my facts straight. My facts come from Blizzards website and they say DX9 cards at a minimum. The thread at 3DFX Zone is 5 years old and the WOW engine has been upgraded a lot since then. There's no way that you play WoW today with Voodoo 5. NEVER.

Here's the facts and they back me up.

It's you and sgt76 who needs to get their facts straight because the information you posted is out of date.

A few of the old MMOs used to run on Voodoo2 but don't anymore. Everquest and Ultima Online come to mind. But they were updated to more recent D3D standards probably for improved compatibility and performance overall.

I was talking about the original WoW. The engine was heavily updated in 2009 or so. Playing with a Voodoo 5 was easily possible a few years ago. And that's what we were talking about.

Yes, thanks. This must have been when the minimum specs were listed as a PIII 866Mhz. I remember the pre-update ran very nicely on Radeon 9800s and similar.

He probably thinks they're Quadro FX5800's or that someone will buy one thinking it's a Quadro and that they're getting a deal because they're priced a lot lower than a Quadro FX5800. nVidia really messed up recycling the FX name. Now there's going to be people selling the old cards for outrageous prices and some people won't know any better because they'll be looking at Quadro prices instead of GeForce prices.

That's a good point about the Quadro catch.

I made up some videos of my wondrous GeForce FX 5900 Ultra playing some games, a few of which it can barely handle. I'm calling it a 5950U because I have it clocked at 500/450.

These are all Youtube links. I wish they'd pump up the bitrate but hey it's free. I uploaded very high quality source vids though so it's not my fault there is blur and blockies.

Videos
Doom 3
Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion
Far Cry
F.E.A.R.
Half Life 2 DX8/9
Half Life 2 Lost Coast DX8/9

I have a 6600GT around and I had a 6800GT as well until I blew it up by having it slide halfway out of a running AGP slot. But really I'm not interested in cards after the FX series because you're getting too close to modern cards then and I'm all set there.

As I've said, the FX series interests me because of its odd architecture that was a horrible choice for DX9. It's neat when a very capable company completely blows their act and yet somehow still outsells their competitor. 🤣

Most of those cards were probably FX5200 being sold at bargain basement prices. I knew a lot of people who got sucked into buying one of those based on their DX9 compatibility claims and regretted it later when they saw how inept they were at running DX9 games. The high end cards from the FX series weren't that much better. Radeon 9500/9700 was what you wanted at that time.

Yup I went from an 8500 to a 9700.

I knew some guys who upgraded from a Ti 4400 to the lousy 5600 Ultra only to find their speed the same or worse. Blind NVIDIA faith.

I think the whole FX range was successful though. A lot of people wouldn't even consider ATI back then. People got burned by their horrible drivers on older cards including 8500 and this became very negative word of mouth.

And some people saw ATI losing in GL for various reasons. The FX cards do deliver for a lot of the GL games back then. ATI was trouble, particularly with Bioware games,
