Its awesome that the PPro had up to 1024kb cache. I always dream of an engineering sample of AMD K6 that was native 133x5.5 extra instructions and 512Kb LOLOL.
I mean I can run NFS Most Wanted at 50FPS on my K6. I want to see a P2 Celeron do that!

About CPU ID, you can try my CPUID utility:
http://www.rayer.g6.cz/programm/programe.htm#CPUID
the DOS and WIN32 version was silently updated. It's not well tested on AMD CPUs as I have only few ones. Mostly tested on intels. It can also read & write MSRs for various testing...

Just wanted to share that I successfully modded a 500MHz ACZ core. Those seem to be the only ones left on eBay.

IHS came off easy enough with a razor blade. I went slow, did a little bit on a corner and went to the next, and did several rounds of that, then it popped right off. Just a little cleanup and it was good.

I left the IHS off. I added some rubber strips at the corners that were about 0.7mm thick. They work a lot like the later Athlon pads. I was able to push it to 600MHz at 2.4 volts stable with an hour of Prime95.

I have one of those AMD K6-2+/500ACZ (still unmodified), but isn't 2.4 V too high for core voltage as this CPU runs on 2 V at stock 500 MHz?

Yeah probably too high. It's stable for Prime95 but was giving me trouble in some games. I dropped it down to 550MHz which it can do at the stock 2.0V with no issues.

think i done f*ed up. Was trying to take off the lid using a steel ruler and managed to snap of a pin on the opposite side of the inserted keyed edge. Put it into the mother board and it still posts. Does anyone know if that pin has any significance?

Seems like it's AN37 pin - Vss i.e. connection to ground. One of many others, so no problem.

Looking at last picture it seems like you chipped the crystal.

Uh, not much comfortable seeing the CPU execution by bad work, I'm still looking for K2+ but they are not available for reasonable prices as in the past, an couldn't find any in my country...

In my case the shipping from US is no-go, many times higher than eu...
If you have K6-2 500 it's still good powerfull CPU if you have 100MHz FSB capable MB...

Heating the cpu first like with a hair dryer or a heating bed helps.

Yeah, there is a lot to go wrong when doing this. Be careful.

Indeed that lost pin is a power/gnd pin so not super critical. Who knows what else it may have broke though.

And as others said, chiped die. 🙁

There are people selling modded ones if you look around. Or you could try again. Sorry.

Nay worries, had some luck getting my new used cars mpg up by 10 by cleaning MAF sensor and changing air filter. Thought I was on a roll. You win some you lose some...

Lots of gas savings to buy retro computer hardware, then 😁

If it's dual it's kind of cool ... 😎

Yah, there's only two things I would recommend for getting the heatspreader off, disposable razor blades or dental floss, and very light leverage along a broad edge when the corners have been well cut.

What about...

Chef's knife? NO!
Meat Cleaver? NO!
Splitting Maul? NO!
Two handed axe? NO!
Hatchet? NO!
Carpet Knife? NO!
2" Chisel? NO!
Any other random edged or vaguely pointed implement that isn't a razor blade? NO!

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

Just purchased another for 25 quid from china, K6-2+ 500 ACZ... Hopefully it arrives before xmas. May not mod it, just use the stock cache available and software underclock feature
