Hi everyone,

First off all , sorry for my poor english.

I've built a Windows 98 machine with those specs :

- Motheboard : Gigabyte GA-6VM7A+ 1.x
- CPU : Pentium III 933 Mhz
- RAM : 384 Mb
- Hard Drive : 20 Go
- PCI cards : Modem 56k and Composite + S-VIDEO capture card.

I got an issue with my GPU, fresh install of Windows 98 SE, i've installed Via 4in1 drivers (v 4.43), soundcard drivers (integrated soundblaster) and USB filter drivers, it works well until i tried to install the nvidia drivers.

I tried both 53.04 and 81.98, but when Windows restart a message says that my GPU is conflicting.

In the device manager , the GPU got an error 12, its says that is confliciting with : System board extension for ACPI BIOS, the conflicts are with some memory ranges.

I've tried differents solutions :

- Change the AGP aperture size in the BIOS, all settings have been tested.
- Disable and enable the PnP OS option in the bios.
- Use differents version of the BIOS version.
- Install differents versions of VIA chipset drivers.
- Reinstall Windows 98
- Disable LTP, and serial port in the BIOS.
- Unplugg the two PCI cards.
- Enable / disable IRQ option for VGA in BIOS.
- Set default BIOS settings.
- Put only 128 Mb RAM stick.
- And change the registry key : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Detect ACPIOption to 1 and add new ACPI device.

I don't know what to do to make this card working...

Thank you for your help.

Have you closely examined the capacitors on the motherboard? The Retro Web's photo appears to have several domed capacitors, and it's likely typical. https://theretroweb.com/motherboards/s/gigabyte-ga-6vm7a-1.x

Thank you for your answer.

I've check all the capacitors on the mobo and they are in great shape, not dommed or leaking.

Have you tried disabling the onboard sound to see if that changes anything?

Try the FX5600 card in another computer to confirm it's OK.

Requests here!

Unfortunately I don't have another computer with AGP, I will try with another Graphics card.

if you're trying different VIA 4in1 drivers there are two diferent versions which conflict with each other, so you shouldn't install more than one, i know theres two different versions that install different things and a couple the same, i think its either related to AGP fastwrite or sata i forget now, also i use an nvidia 5 series fx5200, installing 2 different versions of the 4in1 drivers meant i had to re-install win 98se and start again theres no other way around it, you will have to do this until you find a driver that works, at the moment im using version 5.11a but thats on a 775 socket with a VIA 8237 chipset, since yours is older you might need an older driver, gigabytes site shows version 4.43 for your board, you may have to just try one till it works, first format your drive and re-install windows, before installing any drivers plug your drive into another computer or boot to another Os if you have one on the same pc, and copy all files from the drive to a folder for backup, if the chipset drivers dont work, you can delete all files on the hdd (dont format)and copy the contents of your backup folder over and try a different driver, this will at least save you having to re-install windows over and over. also i use the latest nvidia driver forceware 81.98.
