Hello,

I have a strange problem.
After a fresh install of XP SP2 on a Super7 machine, I am unable to install DX9.
Basically it starts to install but at the very end of the process it fails and revert back.
I am referring to the redistributable package.

https://www.3dfxzone.it/programs/?objid=655

The motherboard refuses to work in 3D (not even 3dmark 2000) with nvidia cards, either mx or fx52000, so it is not a matter of power usage.
But works with a Radeon 9250 just fine (2300 3DMark 2001SE and Egosoft X2 loaded properly - a slideshow actually but works).
I installed the SP3 and .NET packages but no differencies.
Do not know if it is related to this issue.

any clues?

Why are you installing that ancient version. Install the latest one.

Update xp.
Windowsupdaterestored.com will make it easier

Sp3 is most of it, but there might be other weird dependencies

Feb 2005, ancient, really. There's more than one DX9 redist.

Wow, I didn't know the very last DirectX End-User Runtime for WinXP was released in June 2010 and re-uploaded by Microsoft in 2021 until bumping into this thread.

Is this 2010 release of directx compatible with windows 98? Or just from XP onwards, the page states you need at least xp.

Supported Operating Systems

Windows Server 2008, Windows XP Service Pack 3, Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1, Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2, Windows 7, Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows Vista

The version of dx9c I use on windows 98 is from 2005, is the latest one for that OS?

Yes, of course.
No changes.
I think I will use from the beginning the automatic update this time

Apart from (security) fixes it is officially as follows (Windows version -> DirectX version)...

  • Windows 95 -> DirectX 8.0a
  • Windows 98 (SE)/ME -> DirectX 9.0c (Dec 2006)
  • Windows 2000 -> DirectX 9.0c (Feb 2010)
  • Windows XP / 2003 -> DirectX 9.0c (Jun 2010)

If someone is in need of these versions, they are available for download from my website on the tools page (-> https://soggi.org/misc/tools.htm). All the other localizations than DE and EN of the DirectX 8.0a redistributable package will be added with the next update (~someday), the DirectX 9.0c packages are multilanguage.

It would be the same.

Well there *are* DirectX 10 files for Windows XP, as well as projects similar to KernelEx (that Win 9x project). And they work, more or less. They're unofficial, though.

Edit: Whether they work on a K6 is another topic, though, since Vista files are being involved.

Windows 98 (SE)/ME -> DirectX 9.0c (Dec 2006)

After installing Dec 2006, it's possible to install up to Nov 2007 on 98/98 SE, and up to Feb 2010 on ME.

Windows XP ... -> DirectX 9.0c (Jun 2010)

Jun 2010 requires at least XP SP2. SP1 and base XP are limited to Feb 2010.

OK, this is new to me, never heard about it before. Unfortunately I didn't bother with it for over ten years, but I remember that I tested a lot back then. Does it really add new/updated files and why Feb 2010 doesn't work on Win98SE if it works on ME? The latter is kinda suspicious to me.

Yes, this is possible, WinXP always means fully updated XP on my website. Personally I never used WinXP longer below SP2, it was unusable to me before SP2.
