Is the second video adapter (with the exclamation point) an onboard one or something?

Yeah it is. I'm not using that one tho

Is there no way to disable it? That's using resources that can cause problems, and could explain some (or all) of your sound card issues.

After watching many YouTube videos about older computer hardware, YouTube began recommending videos about trains - are they trying to tell me something?

Can you post screenshots of the midi device under multimedia?

I'm getting it going. I'll try out removing the device and I'll post screenshots once I've fixed up the configs and autoexecs in safe mode. The pc won't boot unless I've put an rem before the sb16 emu loading lines in all the startup files... 😠

Okay I went into device manager while I was in safe mode. I removed the standard adapter from the list of display adapters. But when I restarted the pc in normal mode this happened... should I click cancel or what?

Windows is trying to add the drivers for the device again!

OK I clicked cancel on the driver install popup and only the savage 4 is in the display adapters now. Here's some screenshots of the multimedia settings:

to disable the second card once the its in the device manager list double click it and your looking for a checkbox with disable in this hardware profile. The device should end up with a red x on the icon in the main treeview.
the sb live A and B correspond to the bank selected in the audiohq soundfont. See what bank you loaded the soundfont to and select the matching midi device (right now you have sb live midi out selected)

OK I can't even do the soundfont settings because whenever I boot up Windows it installs the sb16 emulation drivers in dos first. These for some reason stop Windows from loading at all. If anyone can help me with that, that would be hella epic.

This happens with all the drivers I've used so I just need to figure out how to let the sb16 emulation tsr drivers and windows coexist.

Sounds like it’s conflicting with something on the system. Maybe reset your BIOS settings then disable as many peripherals as possible (COM ports / onboard LAN etc).

I reset the BIOS, disabled all peripherals in the peripherals section, and windows still crashes due to the conflict with the sb16 emu tsr.

Any more ideas would be epic. I think we're on the right track

what about just using the TSR for pure dos mode only?

How would I go about doing that?

well it seems youve figured out how to disable the emulation tsr, likely from the autoexec.bat?
i like to use phils computer lab batch files : https://www.philscomputerlab.com/ms-dos-mode-super-easy.html
take a look at his video, but you can add the tsr emu to the pif/autoexec.bat
there is a chance still though that the resources are conflicting it might still freeze.

Maybe in the BIOS there is an option to reserve the IRQ the SB emulation is trying to use?

Something else you could try is download the DOS tool HWiNFO. It has an option to list what every IRQ is assigned to. Very helpful for locating conflicts.

Loaded from dos, here's what hwinfo16 has to say about the irq assignments

So the sb16 emu is loaded to irq 7 while I'm pretty sure the Windows driver gets loaded to 5

Is there an option in your BIOS to reserve IRQ5?
