Hi,

the game starts in SVGA mode, presentation, menus, etc. But when I try to play an exhibition match, the resolution drops to VGA.

NHL 96 has settings to switch between low and high resolution, but in this 95 version there is no way to enable it.

Any help?

Because this is yet another 16-bit game. The menus are 640x480 and the gameplay is actually displayed in 640x400, but the in-game assets are low res, whereas the menus contain high quality images.

96 had some higher resolution art, but the player sprites still look like shit.
97 has full SVGA assets.

But the in game capture of Moobygames that you link is at 640x480

No, it's 640x400.

Well, I meant that the capture is still SVGA (640x480 or 640x400 It doesn't matter), but not 320x200 (VGA) as my own DOSBox capture. This is what I mean when I say that during gameplay the resolution changes from SVGA to VGA.

Can someone test the game from DOSBox and tell me what the in-game resolution is?

Thanks.

Can't replicate. I'm getting 640x400 in vanilla Dosbox and Dosbox-X.
Something is wrong with your config settings, since this is the second game where you have this problem.

I'll wait to see what other users who have tried the game say, but I have the impression that the 640x400 in-game screenshots from Mobygames were not taken at actual size but were altered by the software used for the screenshot. Maybe some special version of DOSBox like the one you use.

I say this basically because of the low quality, which does not correspond to a native SVGA resolution.

Note how I have modified my previous screenshot to 640x400 with an enlargement with defined edges. The quality of the result is exactly the same as the Mobygames screenshots, totally pixelated.

I have also found this video, where you can see the resolution change when starting the in-game mode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpUmNGVNW-4

The in-game graphical assets such as sprites are 320x200 no matter what. You can double the display resolution to 640x400 and it will still look the same.

Ok, so that's what I'm saying. The game is like this (VGA) and the Mobygames screenshots are altered. Adding more confusion to the fact that the game menus are SVGA.
