Hello everyone!
@JazeFox Great work!!! Thanks for sharing with the community.

I have two cards: an OPTI 82C931 and a CMI8329a

With the OPTI one version 0.81b it works great.

However, with the CMI8329a I am getting the following error
Unknown PnP card [CMI8329] found

If I run UNISOUND.COM /CL I get
Card #1 [CMI8329] AD-CHIP Audio Adapter

I am running the following command as in the help
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T4 J200 P330

I saw that in v0.75b the support for this card was fixed. I wonder if for some reason it got broken in v0.81b.
Did anyone have the same issue as me with the latest version?

I was searching for v0.75b so I can try if my card works on that version but I did not find it. Can someone please point me to the link?

Many thanks in advance.

Thanks a lot for sharing Vico!!!
Sadly the issue persists.
I am not able to make my CMI8329a to work 🙁

Is there some status on Mediavision card(such as Jazz16 and Premium 3D) support?

Cryptus wrote on 2024-03-19, 12:43:

This driver is really nice!
Just one question, is it possible to implement an errorlevel (for use in batch files), e.g. errorlevel 1 if driver was not loaded (because of wrong option or soundcard not detected) and errorlevel 0 (only) in case of success? (or vice versa)

I am also wondering if there is any documentation on this. I'm trying to set up a hardware detection batch file and error levels would be fantastic.

Well, I have made UNISOUND work with my CMI8329a card.
The solution was not set the recommended configuration SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T4 J200 P330
and just run UNISOUND.COM in the AUTOEXEC.BAT. In that way, UNISOUND autodetects the card and works amazingly.

BTW, I also found the win 9x drivers for the card along with the original DOS drivers please check this post for more info

Has someone ever made "Lemmings 2: The Tribes" work with both music and digital effects using this driver?
For me, it hangs at "Initizalizing Sound."

I use a Crystal CS4237B all-in-one audio chip based card.

Most other games work.

One very important information is probably missing there: on which type of soundcard? 😉
Unisound itself is just used to initialize a card and not a TSR, so the issue might more be with the card or its initialization...

Sorry. This card is a Crystal CS4237B all-in-one audio chip, which is soldered to the Tinyllama v2 board:

With the default settings (A220, I7, D1) for a Soundblaster as music / sfx device, it seems to work just fine on a CS4237B based soundcard here.

Lemmings 2 requires EMS for digital sound, do you have that enabled?

I've found a case where the original init utility works properly, but UNISOUND fails...

The sound card is some generic noname based on Opti 82C933.
The OS is Windows 98SE with BootGUI=0.

First, the original software...

Everything seems to work fine, now let's run Windows...

Still fine, can eg. run Winamp and play .MP3 and .MID files.

Now, let's replace SNDINIT with UNISOUND...

The attachment 6.png is no longer available
The attachment 7.png is no longer available

Again, everything's fine - notably I can hear both FM and PCM, eg. in SkyRoads.
Now, Windows...

The attachment 8.png is no longer available

.MP3 still plays fine, but... .MID playback fails!
Looks like it's playing, but can't hear anything...
Yes, I did check "Volume Control" - nothing wrong there.

Any ideas?

Note that the second DMA channel got changed from 0 to 6 - but this can't impact .MID playback.
More interesting is the fact that "Adlib" ports got changed as well - after SNDINIT it's 380-38B (strange, but works), after UNISOUND it's 388-393 (looks somewhat normal, but doesn't work)...

Can someone with a YMF71x card please confirm if Wolf3D works correctly for them when initialising the card with Unisound? Because I don't get stereo. Wolf3D of course creates a stereo effect by manipulating the mixer. The YMF71x cards are known to have an issue with this but it can be worked around by setting the SB mixer option to 1 - it seems that Unisound doesn't do this, and from what I can it's not possible to do this via Unisound...?

JazeFox: Thankyou for your great work. What is the license of this software? You have mentioned its freeware, however, can it be bundled with other software (free or commercial games for example as a generic driver)? Or it is not permitted? It would be nice if you would include a license file (or use generic license like a bsd or mit type license).

This may be a long shot, but did you try loading Windows without initializing the card in DOS?

Yes, works fine.
But I'm used to using Windows 9x as DOS - it's always "BootGUI=0", and I only run WIN when I really need it.

Initialization by SNDINIT doesn't interfere with Windows, and it would be nice if UNISOUND didn't interfere either.
UNISOUND does have certain advantage: SNDINIT enables SB mode only or WSS mode only, while UNISOUND enables both modes at the same time.

Sure, I can do some multi-config, or a bunch of .BAT files to toggle modes, but maybe there's a more elegant solution?

Meanwhile, I've replaced that Opti 933 with Opti 931 - the problem remains the same...

After fresh installation of Windows 98SE everything works fine:

The attachment 1.png is no longer available

After setting "BootGUI=0" and adding "sndinit /b" the config in Windows got changed, but everything still works:

The attachment 2.png is no longer available

After replacing "sndinit /b" with "unisound" the problem is back - PCM playback in Windows is OK, but can't hear FM playback in Windows:

The attachment 3.png is no longer available
The attachment 4.png is no longer available

Looks like the 380-38B range is OK, but UNISOUND makes the Windows driver to pick the 388-393 range...

I was going to suggest changing the OPL address whilst looking at the UNISOUND.TXT file but...

F: FM/OPL Base address. Default is 388. F0 to disable (not all cards allow
to disable or change this port!). Accepted values: 388, 398, 3A8, 0.
This option is useful, for example, to disable or remap CQM synth in
SB cards if you use other card with a genuine OPL chip tied to 388,
or useful for the future "AWE64 Legacy" project, with a genuine OPL.
Note that a few games (like Dynblaster) will try to use FM synth on
SB ports 2x0, and it will FM output sound (in SB with CQM for example)
anyway. Set FM volume to 0 to avoid it.

It looks like 380 won't be accepted. 😐

Right to repair is fundamental. You own it, you're allowed to fix it.

Not a bug but feature... Since unisound is mainly for pnp cards.
I use unisound with sound blaster 16 CT2290 card, and noticed that unisound doesn't apply SET BLASTER settings. If I configure environment mpu to 300 unisound allways change it to 330. Doesn't matter if the card is jumppered to 300 and set sound has p300 in it.
If I disable mpu by jumper in the card unisound still sets it to p330 even if it's not configured at all in set blaster or is configured p0.
Luckily machine still regonices sound blaster mpu disabled and I can use my picogus as intelligent mode hard mpu card.

Edit: I don't know what changed but now it recognise jumper setting and disables mpu if jumper on the card is set disabled...
But strangely if the jumper is set enabled and address is set @300 unisound still sets mpu to 330.
