I attempted something similar to this once before...in a smaller case with less features..
It was named Fat Bastard..
Well this is his son.
What is it ??
Well ..I have long been interested in old Windows operating systems ...but wanted one PC Tower that ran them all.
It took a long time to pin down the sweet spot in history...where a single motherboard would run whatever I threw at it...both backwards and forwards compatible..
Turns out that this 'sweet spot' was the era of the Pentium 4.
I have more to add about this difficult build..but for now..
Here is a photo of the full PC with the operating systems in pull out caddies.
No SATA here...all IDE/PATA.
It has 2 GB of ram...and not 64 bit..
All the operating systems are 32 bit...and span Windows 3.1/DOS to Windows 7 inclusive ...
All early DOS based OS such as 95 and 98 had to be patched in order that the 2 GB ram did not cause crashes and instability...but even they now run OK.
Drivers were the main issue ..as I use an AGP graphics card...plus a 3COM network card...and an Adaptec SCSI card ...which is connected to various drives/hardware in the mini scsi tower above SOFB..
Suitably named Son of Fat Bastards Baby..
As said ..drivers where an issue as rarely manufactures covered more than say 2 or three operating systems during the pci card or motherboards lifetime.
Thus the drivers often had to be tweaked or encouraged to function in operating systems that the hardware was _never_ intended for.
It really was/is a labour of love....and I aint done yet...as I still have a few hard drive caddies left..
I'm considering Linux Mint....IBM OS2 Warp4 ...and a bare metal Amiga Emulator which works directly with the hardware..
Peripheral devices both SCSI and IDE ...are PD/CD drives...CD drives...RW DVD CD drive...3.5 inch Floppy ..5.25 inch Floppy....DAT tape reader/writer and IOMEGA Zip Drive.
Win 95 ,98, ME had to be patched to limit ram access (Rudolph Lowes patch ...RIP Rudolph the legend)
..but I have a problem in that The Latest addition ...Win 7 will run for now...but the impending deadline for activation ...and a black screen is drawing closer..
Is there a patch out there to stop this happening ?
any help would be appreciated.
The list so far..
Win 3.1/DOS
Win 95rev2
Win 98SE
Win ME
Win NT4
Win 2000
Win XP
Win Vista
Win 7
