I also had problems with the mouse on a Shuttle hot 681. The only way around this was to connect another USB mouse.

I have the same problem with A-Trend ATC-6310V-01 which uses the VIA Apollo chipset. Disable the ACPI and use a serial/PS2 mouse and an AT keyboard.

But it was working on a previous install with ACPI enabled! Keyboard, mouse, USB sticks. All was working.

I decided to re-install and this time I'm getting storage issues - files missing, FS corrupted. The system is currently running memtest but so far there are no issues. The CF also works fine when tested with HDSentinel under Windows. Something is flakey with the system and I cannot figure out what. Again, my previous install was working fine!

But I don't think this is the issue with the mouse.

Interesting, @dominsuprog about your issue with the same chipset. If it wasn't for the fact that everything was working on my previous install... Oh my, why didn't I save a backup 😁

Give Windows ME a try.

I gave it a try back then and I think that I've had enough of Windows ME for a lifetime 😁

a new attempt to install windows 98SE - on a different CF, 8GB instead of 16GB - worked ok. Mouse works, no errors. Doesn't reboot on shutdown but just stays on the "windows is shutting down".

I've now re-installed after disabling ACPI in the BIOS. All went well. All works. Mouse, USB storage, sound card and when I shutdown I get the "now you can turn off your computer".

Maybe the 16GB CF is somehow incompatible or maybe Gremlins. No idea 😀

Out of curiosity I tried the 16GB CF again and windows crashed during setup. The CF in question is a Lexar Professional 233X 16GB UDMA. I bought it second hand, I tested it and it's really a 16GB 😀

Any chance the system is somehow enabling some faster speed and something can't keep up with it?

One thing I noticed on HDSentinel while I was testing the CF under Windows 10 is that sometimes during the surface scan it would begin very fast (30MB/s), then it would pause and continue at lower speed, about 5MB/s.
Wondering whether it's just a bad CF (though I have two identical) and/or it's somehow incompatible with my system?

any ideas?

One more update, probably final.

I tinkered with speed settings in the BIOS but that didn't help.

At some point I tried a different IDE (40pin) cable. That worked! 😀 The 16GB CF is now working perfectly!

This is because you disabled ACPI. Your BIOS, if I'm looking at the right manual, should have an option called "PM control by APM." Enable this option, and your machine will be able to completely shutdown again. Another bonus is APM doesn't use an IRQ like ACPI (9, usually).

The downside is you should reinstall the OS after making the change.

The way I read your post was the 'OK to shutdown' blurb was now an issue. In this case, I would disable APM as well, but if things are working there's no need to change anything.

most likely CF cards, even the brand name ones like Lexar, arent being speed certified in vintage 30cm IDE cable setups but rather in their intended setup of some high end Canon camera.

One thing I noticed is that 50% of the time, at shutdown time, Windows says "windows is shutting down" then the screen goes black, no further messages. At that point I can reset or power off and I don't get errors at next boot. The remaining 50% of times, it would correctly show a "now it is safe to turn off your computer". Not the end of the world 😀

I can also disable APM, now I know exactly how to install all drivers etc, it really takes little time to get up and running. I understand APM is the older Power Management standard.

Re. the CF speed, maybe. Still weird that an identical cable works. I've seen before those crimps failing because of corrosion/oxidation. I might want to re-crimp the connectors for future reliability.

This might sound odd, but installing nusb36.exe solved shutdown issues in Win98 for me on a different platform. Not sure why, but it did.
