Intel Pentium II 266 (Wondering if I should swap to my celly 333 or keep it PII dunno)
32mb PC66 Ram
Riva TNT2 M64 cause Riva TNT's are expensive, and M64's basically preform the same
8.4GB HDD
10GB HDD
Intel AL440LX

on the cpu, not sure in practice it would make any noticeable difference in terms of software / games but i suppose might be fun to benchmark them!

Pentium II 266mhz has 512KB cache but running at 66Mhz, Celeron 333Mhz has 128KB cache but running at 333Mhz...benchmarking them would be interesting.

But a slot p3 would be a nice little boost, I think they went to 1ghz?

OP's LX board will not be able to handle 1 GHz.

Personally, I'd go with the 333 Celeron. Being limited to 66MHz FSB, I'd look for the fastest Celeron and pop it in there, it'd make a nice P2 class machine.

As for the sound, I also don't see a lot of benefit in adding an ISA card, unless you want a wavetable header. The onboard ymf715 will be as compatible as it gets.

That Italian PII’s a pretty cool chip!

It seems to be incredibly rare!

I didnt know it was ISA, I assumed it was hanging off the PCI bus

I have an Intel L440gx+ Dual CPU motherboard in my garage I want to build on but I have miss placed the box of CPU’s I have.
They are somewhere in a box in my garage.
I also have an Intel N440bx motherboard I want to build on.

These Intel ATX 440 motherboards were very popular back in late 1990’s.
They were my favorite too.

The cache of the 266 runs at half cpu speed, ie 133 MHz. Which means that in most practical use, an equally clocked Celeron, albeit only a quarter of the cache is pretty much on par in most applications ..

For 100MHz FSB slot-1, yes 1GHz was the top. With a slotket, 1100 MHz is also an option with 100MHz FSB. Of course, that requires a coppermine and 1GHz capable motherboard. I think there's some different CPUid or something above 800'ish MHz, which not all support even being Coppermine compatible

Someone around here was modding bioses to support more cpus. I think it was the person doing dual socket 8 slotkets with pentium pros

my board is a 440LX its limited to 66mhz chips, and i dont think i support votages under 2v 🤣

🤔 have you looked up your clock gen? Maybe hidden settings? :p

You are correct about the cache speed on Pentium II CPUs, my bad.

swapped the TNT2 M64 to a Voodoo Banshee

Final specs, I just put it in its final home, where it will live for now, its a pain to pull it out so its gonna stay as it is, but

Celeron 333 because In truth I want a Pentium II 333 but don't have one, and the Celeron is close enough to that preformance
