does it matter since it is an internal device?

maybe I want to display it inside the case with translucent/tempered glass side panel? 😁
it doesn't matter really, TBH.

Can one swap out the bleeper for a 75W PA horn to emulate the full might and majesty of an ST-412 ?? IDK if that's quite enough to shake the desk tho. 🤣

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

Something like this ?

That's gonna be a tad over the top size wise, I guess plan B would be getting a servo to whack a 3/4" wrench between two hefty standoffs.

Hm, yes. Sounds reasonable.

Another idea for a deeper HDD sound -- a solenoid. It could be mounted to the chassis so it gets the similar vibration to a normal HDD. See the clunker keyboard as an example: https://mechwild.com/product/clunker/

What about a cell phone clicker? Like the thing apple used to make you think you pushed the home button when it didn’t really move

Don't know, I never owned an iPhone, but it sounds too small, or maybe it was a vibration motor.

Nope, Apple doesn’t use them for ages now. It’s an actuator, that they can control in software to make clicks or vibrations. It would be useable for something like this. Because a real HDD also makes your case vibrate a little and amplify the noise

first prototypes
still need a small fix to enable the external connection feature
(allows to connect a second speaker/buzzer/.. for even more noise)
