Got my dell dimension 3000 finally working with win98

Specs.
865gv GHz 3 .0
512mb ram
Hdd 30gb, 40gb
DVD/cd
GeForce fx 5500 256mb
Audigy 2 zs

While I got the system working with good graphics and sound and even usb I’ve had to still use ps/2 mouse and keyboard.
I’ve tried a batch of games and the ones from win98 up over work but the quite a few dos/win95 crash or lose component function like sound.
If I reboot to dos I lose my cd/dvd rom drive.
I’ve not attempted to install xp yet tho I have limited issues now installing that successfully.
I don’t remember having issues playing these game under win98 back in 98 so can’t understand why they are causing so many problems now.

In Device Manager you should have an entry called Legacy Audio Device (or something like that) Which is what emulates a Dos sound blaster, sometimes this is missing and needs a driver reinstall.
The missing CD drive when rebooting into dos will be due to missing the following:

In autoexec.bat
MSCDEX /D:MSCD001 /L:D

In config.sys
DEVICE=C:\OAKCDROM.SYS /D:MSCD001

You'll have to download oakcdrom.sys (or an alternative) the above example has it saved in c:\ but you can put it in another subfolder if you wish.

How do you boot into dos mode? as this changes where you add the lines.

Either f8 at boot up or restart from win98

Also I disabled legacy sound in bios so I could install audigy 2zs drivers without conflict.

Reading up on things I think part of my problem is that my cd/dvd drive is assigned E: and I’m unable to force it to D: as the second hdd is locked to it
