as far as i know its not possible, Rloew and LoneCrusader tried to get it working years ago but found it just wasn't gonna happen, if those two guys couldn't get it working no one can.

if a windows 98 compatible sound card is not possible use one of these usb ones, i have one and it works in 98 and also a dos window in dos you get sound effects but no music, also its a C-Media, an 8738 if i remember right. they are sold under different brand names, i think mines a startech.

I like how it claims to do 7.1 channel sound but only has a 3.5mm headphone socket for output...

Someone remind me to look at making an inf file for the first driver.
It's not hard, it's just time consuming

I built:
Convert old ASUS ASC boardviews to KICAD PCB!
Re: A comprehensive guide to install and play MechWarrior 2 on new versions on Windows.
Dos+Windows 3.11 auto-install iso template (for vmware)
Script to backup Win9x\ME drivers from a working install
Re: The thing no one asked for: KICAD 440bx reference schematic

The microphone input socket is probably two-way. That said, we're still 2 or 3 sockets short 😉

heres the link to the info on HDA and win 98, read LoneCrusaders post, 3rd one down he worked at it with Rloew and Mercury127, they gave us all the patches and fixes that we use. Rloew was a literal guru if he couldn't get it working right i dont believe anyone can.

it does virtual 7.1 surround over the left and right channels like modern gaming headsets, i think my old C-media 8738 pci card does the same thing either 5.1 or 6channel i forget, anyway the usb version works great in 98 out of the box, if i remember i had sound effects in doom but no music that was in a dos window in 98, if this thing is capable of outputting any kind of midi it would be an awesome solution, even more so if it could work an actual dos.

Aye, as long as it can output stereo sound under Win98, it's enough in my book.

Oh yes. Oh man, on 09/11 it counted up to five years since he has passed away. There's a thread here on VOGONS where his step son Jason also has posted. RLoew was very active at MSFN where another condolence thread is situated. R.I.P. Rudolph Loew aka RLoew.

kind regards
