After almost a year of preparation I finally decided to assemble my W98 Pentium 3 system, first of here is a pair of pics:
specs:
Motherboard: Aopen Ax34II
CPU:Pentium 3 Tualatin 1.4ghz FSB133 512k
RAM:x2 Crucial 256mb PC133
Main GPU: Gainward Geforce 4ti 4600 128mb
3D accelerator: Diamond Voodoo 2 12mb SLI
HDD: WD 80gb
Soundcard: No ISA slot so will have to do with the onboard sound system, can't remember the model (VIA chipset), the soundblaster live was giving me problems with the system resource allocation so I opted to just remove it and be done with it.. even if that means loosing 3D effects /EAX support.
Network: generic Realtek NIC card can't remember the model.
case: unknown Chieftec case
monitor: 17" Viewsonic CRT
OS: Windows 98 SE with the unnoficial service pack.
So far so good, compared to my previous version of this same system which was built around a PIII 650mhz and a Soyo SYVBA133 motherboard, its nice to see how almost all the games I have tried so far ran a lot better thanks to the faster CPU, Voodoo 2 sli setup scales very good under Quake 3 which rans above 60fps most of the time, (it was dipping below 30 with the 650 chip, and it certainly runs faster than on the Setup I had back inthe day (P3 800mhz + Voodoo 3 2000) Same can be said for the Ti 4600 which didn't ran all that smooth I was hoping for in some non glide games, i.e: Max Payne, Star Wars Jedi Knight 2 and Ford Racing (this one ran like shit), but Freedom Force vs the 3rd Reich still runs very slow and I would like to get an Athlon setup which if I'm not mistaken it should give better results before setepping into a P4 or Athlon XP territory.
Next games to try, I want to read opinions since I'm not entirely sure if these are suittable for this PC:
Mafia
Tomb Raider Anniversary
No One Lives Forever 2
No One Lives Forever
Far Cry
Blood Omen 2
Soldier of Fortune 2
