Nice, I had done something similar in the past - I had called it DosBox Distro using TinyCore as backbone, but it was never as good at automatically configuring the audio as I wanted and ultimately let it die.

Now with SBEmu, I think I'd rather try doing something that is both pure FreeDos with the option to run it bare metal or in a Virtual Machine.

Good plan going with Slackware, Ubuntu makes things needlessly difficult with DOSbox, from having a broken ancient default package through making it weird/hard to give it a directory when you try to tear it out and make install a recent version.

That sounds interesting.... though I kind of have it in my head that FreeDos has to have so many different per-game workarounds for it's memory manager that it still might not be very plug and play.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.
