i'm having some odd behavior on the Secondary IDE Interface I have not played around with a lot of older hardware like this in a log time so this might be normal?
or just a quirk of this motherboard?

When I plug hard drives in the primary IDE Interface the 2 hard drives detect fine and i see them in DOS i can Read and wright to them fine.
but when i plug any hard drive in the secondary IDE Interface it detect all the drives fine but when i load up dos i cant see any drives not even in Fdisk.
if i plug a CD-Rom in to the Secondary IDE Interface and I boot in to DOS it loads the drives read disks fine.
my main reason to use the Secondary IDE port going is to get a CF card working on that with rear mount CF adapter to move fines but it is not even working right with a normal Hard drive.

Note: the CF card works fine on the primary port..

My setup i am trying to do is
primary IDE Interface - Master HDD Slave CD-ROM
Secondary IDE Interface - Master on CF card

So maybe i don't have some thing setup right? whats your take on this?

confirmed, same happends here, looks like only one jumper in manual is related to IDE interface,
JP26: 1-2 both ide interfaces, 2-3 secondary ide only ?

hdd drives on secondary IDE are detected in bios, but not working in system, any solution?

That integrated IDE controller is a PCI Busmaster, controller yes? Sounds like it is an early EIDE controller that might support as high as PIO 3, 4 & Multi-word DMA 1, 2

Wild guess here, but perhaps the drives drop to lowest common denominator ATA-0 when they are on the same channel but try and fail to negotiate a higher PATA protocol when on separate channels.

Can you use HWinfo dos to see what ATA protocol they are using when they are on the same channel?

hmm looks like u must use primary master + primary slave to be able to use secondary master ... ?!? hmm next time i try HWinfo ..

ok so "mkubiak402" is my old account and i had to make a new one for some reason i was locked out.. 🙁

i know this is an old post but i am working on that mainboard again and the sec drive on the sec port cant be seen with F-Disk but i can see it with HWINFO

I'm 2 using CF cards, I have tried 6 different cards and like 7 different adaptors.

Got the same issue with my 486-VIP-IO
Current config:
486DX2 66, 24MB RAM, Avance Logic 2301 PCI videocard, NCR 53C810 SCSI + Toshiba XM5301 SCSI CDROM, Aztech NX II ISA soundcard

HDD1 - 540MB Conner IDE
HDD2 - 540MB Seagate IDE

My HHDs perfectly works (detected in BIOS and DOS/Win) on PRIMARY IDE channel and same strange work on SECONDARY IDE channel (detected in BIOS and nogo in DOS/Win). Same time if i connect Sony IDE ATAPI CDROM it successfuly detected by DOS/Win (Windows finds one more IDE (secondary IRQ15 controller). If i connect HDD after controller detection - Windows sees and HDD. 😀
Will try look closer this week - looks like SECONDARY IDE channel more compatible with ATAPI (CDROM, ZIP etc devices) than ATA IDE HDDs 😀
There IDE HDD software drives for this situation, but i hope to find solution without it.

PS. BIOS version 4.26

Aha! 486-VIP-IO IDE channels not equal. PRIMARY IDE chanel is "VESA IDE" connected to VLB BUS VT82C486G chip (support only TWO IDE devices with high speed). SECONDARY IDE channel connected to ISA BUS with support of less-performance devices support (CDROM etc). Its a usual scheme for early PRI/SEC IDE controllers where high-performance IDE devices connected to PRIMARY channel and slow devices uses SECONDARY channel.
Will try to investigate additional BIOS settings (VIA recommends to turn off BLOCK MODE in BIOS and setup VIA 82C486G IDE driver for best performance and compatibility). There are 2-3 jumpers on motherboard for IDE configuration too.

Baked new BIOS for 486-VIP-IO with Promise EIDE BIOS extensions - now in test phase.
Currently HDD on secondary channel are visible in DOS/WIN without additional drivers! 😀

How did you do it?
Nice! IS the BIOS publicly available?

Its new step after my last BIOS with correct (as it can be) AMD 5x86 support. 5x86 version is on the THERETROWEB already.
There are tons of free space in 4.27GN2A BIOS version - so its no problem to add an BIOS extensions 😉
