The "better then expected" sum's its up pretty well. I have a Celeron 400 that lacks AGP but has this onboard, It's a budget offering, keeping in mind its low cost it isn't that bad but it's nothing special either.

What system do you want to put it in? And what do you plan to use this system for?

I am going to answer as an avid gamer back in late 90's thru 2010 because I was. Stay away from ATI Rage based, back then every time a new game came out ATI released a new driver for every major game or else the game had issues with their cards.
Got bad enough ATI changed the name of the a few times but still same issues.. (wonder why it has Rage 128, Rage Fury, etc for same branch of development?)
What was worse is that every time they did that it made some previous game have issues. All my gamer friends gave up on them and moved to Nvidia based which had so much less issues..... just my opinion from experience.
added: Nvidia also had some issues but nothing like ATI at that time....

IIRC Rage Fury MAXX had a dual-chip design: https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/rage-fury-maxx.c644

They all shared the same chip though, just with different clock speeds, memory types, bus width, etc.

Cards of Rage 128 PRO family had comparable raw performance to TNT2 M64 but had much more driver issues.

NOTE: a fury can also be a not pro and just a plain Rage 128. Fury is a marketing name and it is not exclusive to the MAXX. There was just a thread about this.

The Rage 128 Pro / Fury Pro did have advantages like texture compression and better 32-bit and trilinear over the TNT2 so that's something to think about. Does futureproof it a little bit more. Also the dithering table sucks less 😀

This is incorrect, the Fury MAXX is a completely different, dual GPU card..

I'd skip this low end cards. Go for at least some Geforce4 MX to Geforce Ti4200. Depends on your budget of course. But with some luck you could find a good deal.

This one is actually really good for what it is, because it's a low-profile Rage 128 Pro with fully functional 128-bit memory bus. It's the fastest card of 1999 for SFF.

It's one thing if he is looking for a specific or period correct card, but another if he wants something that works good. It's better to spend 20-30USD more then buy something cheap and later replace it anyway.

I know that the TNT2 M64 is uncool and all, but... I had a Dell one back in the day, it worked fine, drivers were solid enough to stay out of the way, it even did some acceptable enough gaming. Not a bad card if you couldn't afford better.

And certainly... much less likely to cause trouble than ATI's cards at the time.

Okay, so if you want period correctness, the top of the line option at the time of a Dimension 4100 was a GeForce 2 GTS. Maybe a GeForce 2 Ultra but I am not sure Dell offered (and I presume with all of Internet Archive's recent issues, I can't check wayback machine) those. eBay is also full of Dell OE GF2 MX cards.

I really, really would urge you to stay away from ATI. In part because ATI had a different philosophy when it came to drivers in those days - they had separate drivers (with separate bugs) for each of their products. Nvidia had one driver family, which I think was called... Detonator... back then, so they would release updated drivers for the entire product lineup quite regularly. ATI would eventually embrace the Nvidia-style model with the Catalyst driver family on the later Radeons, but I don't think that applies to the cards you're looking at.

ATI kicks nvidia's ass because they don't sabotage PowerVR cards (in the drivers or in the market and otherwise). 😀

also before anyone brings up the old 'ati suck's at opengl It is a shit grafik' quake3 bars - r_primitives, everyone. The same CVA detection glitch bit back at nVidia years later.
