Guys, I am very fond of these old Sony Vaio laptop.
I bought one back around 1998.
It was not exactly this one but similar.
I actually had the Pentium-III@500mhz model with WIn95
I still have one in my Garage.

This one is an Athlon 1ghz model running WinXP
These have a CDROM and Floppy drive built in.

It works really good
I upgraded the ram to 256mb and replaced the hard drive with HGST 7200rpm 80gb
The original hard drives were very Slow. These 7200rpm drives are a BIG upgrade in performance.

I am not sure what audio it is using but it sounds really good for an old laptop
Crystal clear audio with good bass.
Sounds really good.

Well, I have a few of these old Vaio laptops in my garage that I repaired and upgraded and they work really good.

These bring back allot of memories for me of the late 1990’s

I really like these laptops. They are EASY to fix and upgrade. But the trackpad was a little small.

Not bad for gaming. “Curse of Monkey Island” plays really good on this laptop with WinXP.
Reminds me of the White Apple G4 MacBooks.

Nice one, I have PCG-F480, with large & bright 15" screen, I think biggest screen in class. A little upset NeoMagic video, but for late DOS games that's fine.

I remember they used Yamaha YMF744B-R chipsets, so sound really great. TFT screen LT150X3-126 or LT150X3-124, very cheap and easy to replace.

Yeah, I think the one I had was a PCG-F490 or PCG-F590
I don’t remember only that it had a Pentium III
I have it in my Garage.
But I like this one with WinXP.
It plays games very good.

Some more photos

These were popular in USA computer stores.
Marketed towards the Home family multimedia computer for games, applications, video editing and music editing.
Came with the Sony iLink connector for connecting the Sony Digital Camera and video cameras.

“I Feel the Need For Speed”.

This laptop has pretty good Speakers.
These have a audio feature called "3D audio" that sounds like "Aureal 3D"

You wouldn’t happen to have a recovery image for this laptop?

I have several of these Vaio laptops and lots of recovery disks but I don’t know where the recovery disks are at.
They are somewhere in my garage in boxes.

I just use Windows XP installation disks.

There is nothing really great on these Sony recovery disks.
The windows XP installation disks have all the drivers you will need.

There is a lot of bloatware on the Sony recovery disk and you have to hack up the installation to remove it.
So I just use the Windows XP OEM installation disks.

While I still need to repair my FXA53, I have managed to get my F560K working with Windows 98.

As it was, about an hour ago.

Beauty shot.

I still lack a few drivers, but they aren’t exactly mission critical. But this has been a project years in progress.

Just thought I’d share.

Thanks for the reply, I guess I’ll have one more xp laptop.

I have the PCG-FX205K (P3 850Mhz) Had to wait a while but got the dock about 2 years ago for £13.10
I do like the design, but for some reason I can't install Win2k with a generic CD, Luckily I did get the recovery CD but as mentioned does contain a lot of bloatware.

With the F560K, I had to download pretty much everything to find the video driver I needed. Thanks to other Vogons members, I got sound to work. Thanks to Phil’s Computer Lab, I got the chipset drivers. I don’t really mind the bloatware as long as there’s something useful. I haven’t tried to watch a DVD with it yet, but wonder if I even can.

My FXA53 needs a new screen, CPU, put through an ultrasonic cleaner, and rebuilt. Currently it’s in its constituent parts in storage. I was kinda hoping there was a WinME restore/recovery CD out there for it, but looks like there might not be. So, I’m either going to use xp or Solaris 8 on it.

Whatever the case, I’m absolutely thrilled to have got this far with the F560K. I’m now weighing on whether or not I want to go with an SD card option instead of the hard drive.

Sony liked to use the Yamaha sound chip. I used the driver from Audition 32 sound card before in order to get it to work.
You may also need the latest service packs and update. But it may break other things if you’re using the original Sony CD image installer.

What program did you use to display your hardware info ?

Took me a bit to find it, but it’s AIDA16 that I have on Ultimate Boot CD 4.11.
