It installs a lot of things and doesnt let me decide which install and which not.

Is it a good idea to install it for a retro system for executing retro software and games?

Which benefits it gives and which disadvantages does it have?

Thank you

It's at least a better idea than installing any "unofficial service pack"

Using Windows Update Restored is better idea as well.

Main benefit is that it provides most of the updates for Windows 98, the disadvantage is that it requires an internet connection. The Security Update CD is the opposite, it can be installed offline but lacks several updates.

refer to this list: https://msfn.org/board/topic/84886-the-comple … r-windows-98se/

for the dead KB links, use betaarchive.com.

well, that link is a enormous list of fixes, but it doesn't mention which ones are in this CD, also this CD haves more things, not only fixes, it does have also software and other stuff

you'd think everything up to about february 2004 would be on there, right? at least that would seem pretty logical to me. the late updates are purely security/internet related anyway.

the one update that stands out to me is the shutdown supplement, because hangs at shutdown are something that i have experienced in the past with 98se. there is also a WDM audio update in there that might be worth it, but it seems to be usually recommended to use vxd drivers anyway for gaming, with cards like sblive.

also, there is an update claiming to fix USB issues with AMD processors faster than 350 mhz and VIA usb controllers - probably relevant for some people running that combination.

the problem is that this CD installs a lot of stuff, not only fixes, it installs IE and some other software that is not necessary, I need to think about it, maybe is better to not install it

IE installs updated components that can also relate to security. 98 already comes with IE bolted in, so it'll only be an upgrade.

I have Win98 SE installed on an A64 754 system right now, combined with a 9800 SE using the Omega drivers to unlock the 9800. I had this card installed on an older P4 PC with Win98, and I decided to see if the CPU boost was enough for this card to run Halo CE acceptably since it was too slow in the P4 system. I used KernelEX as I had before, but it wasn't working. I had the game running for a short time then exited it; after changing some settings and restarting, the system would hard lock on the game's splash screen. I remembered that I had used the 2004 update disk on the P4 system, so I uninstalled the game, ran the update CD, then reinstalled Halo and after that it worked. It seems that one or more of those updates is necessary if you want to run Halo CE on a Win98 system.

I would definitely recommend using Windows Update Restored first before installing anything else (including DirectX runtimes), as it seems to crash Internet Explorer in regards to a "DDRAW.DLL" error when launching the page.

For any EOL version of windows I don't see the need for any updates unless something specifically requires it. even fully patched it still isn't secure.
For me and Win98 this is Installer 2.0 which is required for Daemon Tools.
I found the Windows shutdown patch actually stopped my PC turning off, so again if its not needed don't install.

I also install the final version of IE and Office. This is required just personal preference.
