dosbox staging fails to install game properly
use dosbox daum as i said
and don't install game to already existing folder with game files
install game to a completely new not existing yet folder (game installer will create the folder)

new discovery:
game doesn't get into the menu when videos are on cd
but gets to the menu when videos are in game folder
(sound has to be disabled in setsound.exe)
(talking about spverite.exe all the time today)

Yup that worked!

The videos can be skipped by hammering [ENTER] repeatedly and eventually the menu shows up. Starting a game and skipping a few more videos starts the game.

But the game runs in slow mo @6.5 fps and lots of errors are logged. The botched installs run at a much higher framerate.

I think the videos are corrupted because of stride errors in the VESA BIOS implementation.

[EDIT] The slow-mo framerate was because I'd set cycles= 10000. This SPVERITE.EXE doesn't that.

This should fix the errors in the logs (I don't know if other apps are broken by this):

Rebel moon down the well crush happens on real hardware too in both modes: rendition and 3dblaster.
Crush doesn't happen in both modes (rendition and 3dblaster) if you start new game before loading a save game.
(tested on i5-3450)

While that's not good news, it does let Dosbox-Rendition and RReady off the hook!

Does the save game menu render correctly for you in Rebel Moon with Dosbox-Rendition/RReady?

Is anyone else getting a malware notification on dosbox? It gets zapped as soon as I build it.

I reported it to Microsoft and the automated tests detect malware in the .rdata segment and a text file.

i just disable avast and don't worry.

save manu on real hardware is like in dosbox-rendition
if you want to save first level it displays top left quarter of briefing background without briefing text (you see "OI" letters at the right edge)
if you want to save eleventh level it displays whole briefing background without briefing text

in 3dblaster mode it is game like in vga mode

both 3dblaster and rendition modes don't have green cursor that is present in vga mode

I don't know how I'm going to distribute this on the Microsoft Store, If it's getting zapped everywhere. One of the two things it classifies as malware is a text file.

I can't tell Microsoft store users which av to use. Paying for a piece of software which gets zapped as soon as it's installed reflects badly on the devs.

i think many antiviruses may have ability to:
- disable it,
- different levels of protection,
- ability to add exceptions for files
(maybe ms antivirus has those options too)

one level of protection is to disconnect from internet and use only cds/floppies
you already don't allow this level of protection 😉

That's what I'm doing. There was a horrible game I worked on a while ago. Some paying customers bought it on Steam and found it got zapped instantly. It was Ue4 based. Oddly enough the Steam av check found it wasn't a virus on the ms dB. But later on it got flagged.

Solved. (for anyone wondering)
(This was caused by saving without giving a name to saves. Adding names make them visible again.)
(no problem here, just illusion of missing slots, that were still there all the time)

Thanks for that @robertmo3! I seem to recall the first n slots being invisible the first time I tried to save after a fresh install. Maybe I messed around with the filesystem, can't remember.
