Playing through the original Doom games on UV is a good time, and feels closer to survival horror with the requirement to conserve ammo compared to just run 'n gun gameplay.

Yup, I did have a few of those survival horror moments at the start of each episode, and especially during the first two levels of Ultimate Doom: Episode 4. Those maps are hard even on lower difficulty settings, and become quite a challenge on UV.

Despite "Thy Flesh Consumed" being my least favorite part of classic Doom, I actually had a decent enough time with it until I reached E4M6. Between the constant lava floor traversal, weird teleporter mechanics and the close quarters Cyberdemon fight, it just wasn't fun. The last couple of levels were mostly fine, featuring lots of enemies but with generally well designed environments. I think my biggest gripe with Episode 4 was its inconsistent difficulty and varying map quality. Still feels more like some fan made WAD than an official iD Software product.

PC#1: Pentium MMX 166 / Soyo SY-5BT / S3 Trio64V+ / Voodoo1 / YMF719 / AWE64 Gold / SC-155

PC#3: Athlon64 3400+ / Asus K8V-MX / 5900XT / Audigy2

That's interesting you feel that, because "Thy Flesh Consumed" was made by id's original designers. In fact, having come out after Doom II, it is, as far as I recall, the last level pack released by id's core team (until Romero's Sigil). Final Doom, Master Levels, No Rest for the Living - were all third-party creations.

To clarify, I'm not a huge fan of Final Doom or the Master Levels either.

On the other hand, "No Rest for the Living" feels like a proper continuation of Doom 2, with level design that (for me) even surpasses some parts of the original game. I can't really say the same for "Thy Flesh Consumed" with regards to Doom 1. That said, I did play Sigil (the first one) and I greatly prefer it over Episode 4. But again, that's just due to my personal taste. I know there are plenty of people out there that love some (most?) levels of Episode 4.

I've started playing it a few days ago, thanks to your earlier mention of it. 😀

TBH, I don't even remember most of them. Other than E4M1 (ridiculously hard on UV with not nearly enough ammo to kill 4(WTF!) Barons), E4M2 (A fun Romero level with a telefrag-to-secret-exit gimmick) and parts of E4M8/E4M9.

I've been playing through episode 1 of DOOM using the new VESA modes in FastDOOM. I'm playing on a K62+ / YMF719 / X2GS system and DOOM has never looked or sounded better, just thrilling.

Life? Don't talk to me about life.

Mafia (i'm reviewing the performances of all games i play ) i'm liking it again a lot even after all those years, sure it can be stiff in the gameplay department but even then it's a pleasurable experience, it feels like a game that doesn't care if it's wasting your time with slow moments, which is actually positive in this one, sometimes you have to savour the scenery while going at 60kmh over the city and that's fine, the game also works pretty well on a 4200TI and P4 2.6, performance never drops too harshly even with everything maxed out at 1024x768 and unlike many people recommanding over the internet i left the EAX option enabled, it works perfectly and i was able to pin point enemies with precision thanks to localized 3D audio.

i liked Mafia, the depiction of the time period and everything but i never finished it - quite difficult as i recall. I should try again.

recently i loaded gta3 on a machine just to test and ended up playing yet again, only this time i won 'Turismo' (El Burro's first phone mission) with a plain Taxi. i used to find this difficult as the competitors, though crashing all over, always seemed to recover and speed away at critical moments. Anyway, i love those portland missions, nostalgia but also just fun to try in different ways

Ah mafia. Very advanced for its time. I followed the development in pc gamer at the time and really looked forward to its release.

I remember you could shoot out the tires of the opponents car, which was useful to do in beforehand you suspected there was going to be a car chase. So amusing to see the NPC drive with a flat tire 🤣.

The speed limit in town was a bit stupid imo. Probably not even very period accurate as safety was not invented. (Also smoking after sex was mandatory at the time.) 😉

The last boss was also quite hard. Remember the frustration to this day. :-p

Personally I'm delving deeper into Baldur's Gate séries. Decided to skip icewind dale for now. I'm doing a Baldur's Gate 2 run with a dual shadow theif dualclassed to mage. Will be amazing when I level a bit more. The dual classing system is somewhat broken and weird though, also takes away the role play element as it makes no sense that you loose your original abilities to focus on an other class, just to get them back later. But I'm just having fun and if I don't like it I will just edit the save game no big thing.

The ability to "change your mind later" helps me in these games because I often go into a reroll spiral and eventually quit if I don't find my main character interesting.

Lords of the Fallen (2023)
First of all, it annoys me that I have to specify the year, since they ridiculously decided to use the same name of a game from 2014 in what I guess is a weird but crass attempt to leverage the extremely limited success of the original game.
Anyway, LotF (2023) has nothing to do with LotF (2014), other than that they are both mediocre Dark Souls clones. The 2014 game actually had its own feel, as it was very slow and clunky, while the 2023 game just feels like playing a budget version of Dark Souls. It adds some stuff, like a completely tedious lamp item you have to constantly pull out to check for secrets and even mandatory paths forward. The graphics are allegedly amazing, but there is absolutely no artistry at all, and every area is basically all the same color, with no attempt to guide your exploration. The maps are tiny, but it's extremely easy to get lost, because everything looks the same. I refunded right at two hours.

The Surge
This is basically sci-fi Dark Souls, developed by the people that did Lords of the Fallen 2014. It's actually quite decent, and adds a lot to the Souls formula. You basically choose either a fast/weak or slow/strong exo-suit at first, and from then there's just a handful of weapon types. However, each weapon type has a pretty extensive set of moves, so using one-handed weapons feels quite different from dual wielding, etc. Outside of that, the biggest decision you make for character customization is your implants. Meanwhile, you need to upgrade the "core" level of your exo-suit, which just adds more slots for better equipment, more implants, etc.

It's a crazy future world where crippled people are shipped off to be fitted with exo-suits to "do what they can" for a megacorp, but what you realize immediately is that the exo-suit isn't something you fit into, but something that is permanently attached to you (shown in a horrifying video where something malfunctions and your character is forced to undergo this without anesthesia). Meanwhile, the spokesperson/CEO of the company is all over the place in billboards telling you how amazing Apple, I mean Microsoft, I mean, Google, I mean CREO is, while you are surrounded by maniacs driven insane by their connection to the constantly online grid. It's like System Shock mixed with Dark Souls.

The level design is quite awesome, and unlike the latter Dark Souls games, you just get a single safe spot within an area, but unlock shortcuts back as you explore. Like with Dark Souls, you encounter NPCs with their own quests, but the quests tend to be pretty straightforward; he wants you to find drugs, she wants you to find an awesome staff.

Combat is a bit of a mess, sadly. Enemies are pretty unpredictable, and it's also hard to read their animation. Like you, the enemies are mostly humans trapped inside monstrous machines, so it's hard to tell from where an attack will come. Sometimes, enemies just suddenly run at you and flail widly, and you simply cannot react. Even worse, blocking seems to be inconsistent. There's no real differentiation in animation between a blockable and unblockable attack. Sometimes an enemy will just swing his arm and you'll take full damage even when blocking. In other words, you simply cannot rely on blocking in this game, so you are constantly hopping back and to the side to dodge everything. But because of the spastic animation, it can be very hard to figure it out.

Anyway, other than Nioh, it's the best Dark Souls clone I've played so far.

I played through Fallout 4 recently and I've started playing around in Fallout 76.

4 took a while to grow on me and I don't hate it like I did when it first came out, but 76 just feels like I'm simply filling time and not really doing anything.

To conclude the matters I wrote about in my last post:

bakemono wrote on 2024-04-27, 12:18:

I've been playing ToK, a very long JRPG, for over a year. I made it to the (final?) boss on the 256th floor a while ago. On my first attempt I got wiped out by the second form. I carefully reconfigured my party for another attempt, in which I slowly defeated the first and second forms only to be wiped out by the third form. Since then I've been grinding and grinding some more.

I did finally finish the main game. The key to beating the final boss was configuring kawashima-san so she could cast Nuclear (for ~20,000 damage...)

I should mention that this is one of many games I got from DLSite, which will no longer be possible as they've just been cut off by Visa and Mastercard, ...

DLSite now has a workaround in place, which involves going to a separate site to buy a serial number, which then can be redeemed on DLSite for points.

Lately I have been playing a bit of Wizardy: Labyrinth of Lost Souls. It's a basic dungeon crawler. Like Generation Xth: Code Hazard, but not as good.

It very much does feel like a waste of time. I just tried doing a mission where you steal the federal reserves store of gold from a vault and according to posts on reddit that scenario has been loaded with bugs for years and rarely works for anyone. So I closed the game in disgust and it's uninstalling now.

I do really hope Microsoft takes the fallout IP to someone other than BGS so that we can get a game at some point before 2034, and have it be developed for more than the final year and a half of the 5 it took to make.

Now that I finished Might and Magic III, I'm deciding on my next game. Right now I'm considering:
Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3
Doom 2016
Control
Stalker: Call of Pripyat
Prey 2017
Bioshock Infinite

Here's my final write-up of MM3:

You've got some notables on there, each not without it's own particular flaws though, but I think you'd be served well by any of them though my personal vote is for Control, which I think has the most unique atmosphere. Though Prey 2017 is probably the best game in that list.

Yeah, I started Control and played 23 minutes. I'm liking it. I think I will stick with it. Just got into the director's office, picked up the gun, and was transported to a weird outdoor location with geometric shapes.

Now I think we should rank these, and these are my objective ratings, though there's no such thing as an objective best game:

1 - Prey 2017
2 - Doom 2016
3 - Control
4 - Bioshock Infinite
5 - Stroker: Call of Priapism
6 - Sniper: Ghost Warrior

Personally I don't even like the last 2 on that list, but to some that might be an indication that it could be their favorite...
