Sorry, I still have no idea how that program works.
it's basically just like dosbox, but instead of dosbox.conf you use a .bat
But there's like 20 exe files and trying to run them got me nowhere.
It's no problem though, Redguard is playable just very choppy at times
my second link has only one exe and one bat
Hey Opaque79,
The character animations and engine cutscenes in that game have always been a bit janky when it comes to FPS counts. As far as the overall FPS in the game it takes a bit of raw horsepower to get a decent FPS on a modern system. This was a screenshot from my 5900X coupled with a 2080 GPU (FPS on the low side in a city, top left corner). I bottom out at about 29 FPS in complex scenes, but not too often. I usually see numbers in the 40s and 50s on average with that rig. When i first bought the game from GOG it was almost unplayable. Upgrading nGlide to a newer version didn't do anything for me either. In hindsight, I realize now this game was pretty sluggish on release (at least on my system) and now on an emulated OS and emulated Glide I suppose it's a small miracle the thing runs as well as it does. Still not the worst Bethsoft title. One word. Battlespire. Should have called it Bugspire.
Redguard distant sound loud
liqmat i wonder if you confirm the bug

Only helpful with a physical copy, not with the GOG version
btw there's a building missing on your picture 😉
Using DGVoodoo instead of NGlide does help the framerate a little.

Mixed bag. Environmental sounds fade in/out with distance normally. The guards sound loud far away or close by, but the woman praying in the screenshot fades in and out appropriately. (yes, I am being fiercely pierced in that shot)
As far as the missing building, it's not missing, but has always been out of view (behind the distance fog) from that location. Maybe you have yours setup differently? Mine is vanilla install from GOG. No idea.
building - yes it has increased view distance and fog removed (possible in both 3dfx and soft versions)

Not sure where the snake charmer is, but I'll try to find him and see if I have the same issue. Will let you know.

Yep. Snake charmer is loud when I walk away from him, but fades in appropriately as I approach him. Weird thing is, that snake charm tune plays in several parts of the city (snake charmer not present) and those fade in/out appropriately with distance. It's like once the sound file is going full volume it wont stop until the sound effect is complete and then just cuts off.
In all honesty, this is like Doom on a DX2/66. Back in those days I thought the frame rate of Doom on a 66 was smooth as butter because I had nothing to compare it to. Nowadays it's choppy to me. Almost the Mandela Effect in full force here. Same with this game. I think I was so enamored with the visuals and open world, my brain filtered out all the other rough spots.
Some nice tricks:
SYSTEM.INI
[3dmanager]
cache_lifetime=2048
(this one gets rid of the annoing often hdd access when moving and often just when turning around with hdd access with every single turn when you just keep turning in one place 😉 )
[xngine]
back_plane=3000000
(this one enlarges view distance)
haze_depth=3000000
(this one removes fog in software version)

Nice. Yeah, I haven't played this game in so very long. Will give that a try. I cringe to admit I never finished the game and probably should.
This looks promising, but looks far off: https://forums.dfworkshop.net/viewtopic.php?t=4642
here is the location when you can try turning around again and again and every time the game will pause for hdd access 😉
here is why distance sux in this game, notice how close the observatory is from the harbor, how small the map actually is, well, no horses just running, but looks so big when you don't see other side of the ocean 😉
