So I've "gotten around" to playing with this little box. I've noticed that it will fail to boot sometimes. ( about 1 in 4) So I start by removing the black goo from the original heatsink. turns out, I have a 450mhz k6-2+ installed! That means the bios knows how to properly address the on-die L2.

Next up, I remove the original 40gb hard drives and I go to install two of these bad boys:

I have several sata<>ide adapters. However I found out that they interfere with the mounting screws. I can either mod the case and lose the "tool less" aspect of the rails. (those big-ass screws) or use IDE drives. I went with the latter option, for two reasons. 1: I'm limited to 137gb anyway 2: if I can avoid any permanent modifications, I will. I happened to have 2x 250gb drives on the shelf that I recently retired from my file server. While not as low-power as the WD drives I have pictured, they are still use about 40% less than what was stock. Also, for the record, I did make a drive image of the 40gb drives, so I can always go back to that.

Sadly, the vast majority of the software for this machine might be lost to the null void. I sent an email to Sun politely asking for a restore CD, latest updates, etc. It took me about 3 emails before I even got someone to admit the damn thing exists, and I did get the "latest" restore Cd but nothing else. I'm aware someone made an aftermarket software and I MIGHT do that, but the one thing I want to keep on this little box is the appleshare server part. I was going to do this with a whole computer but this blue box makes everything pretty and low power. the low-power thing is nice, because I have this fixation with making EVERYTHING dual cpu.

I'm really starting to enjoy/hate playing with this box. It has made me get off my arse and make a null-modem cable. Instead of video, you connect up hyperterm and a serial cable and it works (mostly) just like any other process. I've found that the system actually boots initially from an onboard 1mb flash chip. I've also made the following observations:

- 'motherboard' L2 cache is 64kb and disabled with the use of a plus K6 processor. At least as far as I can tell.
- I'm probably going to recap this thing. It hangs often during the "probing pci devices" part of the boot process.
- There is a small program in the bios that you can access from terminal. (think grub) this means I can boot anything from anywhere, if I can finger out how to do it.

I got fed up with it for tonight, because I tried for an hour to get the restore CD to work. I spent a lot of time trying to use a VM, but the CD will only work with like 5 network cards, none of which my VM software will VM. I then had to toss together a whole machine with a 3com 905b and spent another hour before I had a RTFM moment and realized that you practically must use a cat-5 crossover cable, because the CD has its own DHCP and boot services. So when I couldn't find my cat5 cable crimper nor a spare 10/100 hub...

Things I want (need) to do:

- modify board to 5.5 multi instead of 4.5
- acquire K6-3+ one that will work with a 5.5 multi
- replace caps
- place CF cards into IDE ports
- install sata card and 2x large drives. (probably the 260gb drives I have pictured)
- mod an AT power supply in lieu of the black brick I have.

For the time being, I'm probably going to keep this thread updated.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

Been playing a bit more on this box. Turns out the memory stick I was using wasn't compatible or was bad or whatever. A different stick and now it never hands on "post". Re-capping this board went from #1 on the list to 1 below the last item. Moving along, The ide>sata adapters I have do not work at all in this system, so using cheap quiet low-power 320gb drives is out of the question. It seems to like the CF cards I have until this happened:

I do not know much about these things...
The one thing I do know is that newer Linux kernels will not work with K6-2 because they do need a real "6th generation CPU"
Kernel 2.4 must be old so that can not be the issue.

I found an old thread on another forum.
I am not sure if the information is useful.
There is a dead link to patch for K6-2 Cobalt systems running Linux with the 2.4 kernel.

Not really. At least not in the traditional sense. I'm going to try an aftermarket OS. Maybe that might help.

I use my qube3 as a NAS DLNA server .It is a dream to use under davesword's kernels / strongblot updated centos to 4.9 as samba server using webmin.I will tell you my upgrades.AMDk6-3+ sta 600mhz , 2 x 512mb =1gig ram ,16gb CF for OS and i have used from 0.75terra sata to ide adapter ,please note to use the adapter with the Jmicron chip, i have tested others with no success .I will post pics in 2 minutes.you can upgrade your qube3 more to my specs.

300gb working,breaking the 137gb burden.Vive Qube3.In that free pci i am testing some gigabit ethrnets as the onboard nics are the burden.

Sadly I think my little Qube is going to sit on the shelf for a long time. It works perfectly fine, its just a lack of storage. i just setup a 16x320gb sata array (eventually will be upgraded to 16x500g). There is just no way the qube can compete with that. It makes no sense to run 2 computers when one can do it all, better.

that said, this wonderful server of mine cannot share files to old macs. So there might be hope for this box as an Appleshare server. But thats a project for another day. And for the record, I'm still going to look for a 550mhz capable k6-3+ and so forth. Its just kinda low on the pecking order for now.

You might try a USB to Parallel controller vs the PCI card; it looks to have a USB port (and you should be able to use a hub if it needs >1), and it'd leave the PCI slot free for whatever (SATA, faster Ethernet, WiFi, etc). I will add that I've had mixed luck with such adapters in the past though - not sure what the actual cause is but they don't seem to work as universally as boards with onboard LPT ports. Cool looking little box too.

well the problem mostly lies with the hardware. It doesn't have a bios as you would think of one, It has a modified redhat 2.2 kernel loaded directly into a flash chip. the problem is, there is not enough room for an updated kernel. At least not without hacking major parts out of it. Also, because there is only one pci slot. you have to decide between a hard disk controller (for hard drives >137gb) OR gigabit ethernet. At least I have never seen gigabit ethernet and sata on the same pci card. Let alone getting it to work with a 2.2 kernel.

Hrm, that's kind of a kludge. What about FireWire? It would support both networking and connection to bigger hard-drives (external though). (Note that I have never actually tried a TCP/IP-over-Firewire network; but for external storage or multimedia devices I've never had complaints).
