I would like to test the CYP CP-254's latency when I receive it . Beyond subjective tests for lag, any recommendations for a test program that runs under DOS or Windows 9x or even Linux ?
The CP-25x family is advertised as having a 48MB buffer, as is the Geffen VGA to DVI Scaler Plus . I wonder if this points to common alities in hardware design .
don't know of any PC software for lag testing, but the OSSC has a built in lag test function
it requires swapping out an 0603 SMD resistor if you're up for that

Considering it is still within the return window, if it craps out, maybe not just yet .
CYP CP-254 arrived. It took less than 24h to get it from City of Industry, California to the Greater Montreal area . Impressive .
Prelim. report on unit.
- Does 70Hz in an out, as expected
- Can convert to 60Hz
- To work with OSSC, OSC TX mode must be set to DVI
- Handles 720x400@70Hz input but not 640x400@70Hz . Manual said as much, but I was still hoping
- Not very agile with exotic timings or resolutions. Deviate from standard VGA or VESA timings by a few lines and you will lose sync.
- Scaling is sharper than Nvidia's when scaling 720x400 to 1024x768 or 1152x864 .
So definitely usable if correct aspect ratio while maintaining 70Hz is desired, but far from a perfect solution, buy any stretch (pardon the pun) .
OSSC Pro can't come out fast enough in my book .
TLDR: What I want/need does not seem to exist at any price point .
EDIT : The Startech DVI2DVI bears a striking resemblance to the CP-254, in physical terms, spec-wise and in OSD menu layout . It may well be a CP-254 in disguise . My CP-254 unit has firmware 3.3D, if anyone wants to know .
EDIT2: The Hall Research SC-VD-2 is also strikingly similar to the CP-252 .
After lots of comparisons between manuals (specs and OSD layout) and physical layout, I am about 99% convinced that the Startech VGA2HDMI Pro (first version) is a rebranded CYP SY-P293 . If that is the case, the SY-P293 should have undocumented 720x400@70Hz input support (because the VGA2HDMI Pro does) and documented 1024x768@70Hz output support .
So, in the interest of science, I am seriously considering buying one . Should I ?
I already have a
- Gefen VGA to DVI Scaler PLUS (dead)
- OSSC rev. 1.6
- Extron RGB-DVI 300
- Crestron HD-SCALER-VGA-E
- CYP CP-254
- CYP CP-253 (in the mail)
Or do I need to seek help ?
OK, I decided to order the CYP SY-P293 , but I promised myself that this will be the last one until the OSSC Pro .
P.S. I might still need to seek help .
I'm glad you're trying to figure all this out. It's a shame it's all so difficult to find good information on 70Hz DOS gaming.

Yes, we will try very soon to compile all these results onto a excel like sheet somewhere, maybe here : https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/18X3ux … 01Ac/edit#gid=0

The compiled results should possibly be considered for a place on the Vogons WIKI .
A few key points, IMHO, to consider for VGA to DVI/HDMI converters(with or without scalers) and for DVI/HDMI to DVI/HDMI scalers :
a) Does it accept 720x400@70Hz and 640x400@70Hz (analogue)
b) Does it have setting/option/preset to choose between resolutions in a)
c) Does it accept 720x400@70Hz (digital)
d) Does it accept 640x400@70Hz (digital)
e) Does it have scaler functionality
f) Does it support pass-through for 720x400@70Hz and/or for 640x400@70Hz
g) Does it support pass-through for higher resolutions
h) Max 60Hz resolution outptut
i) Max 70Hz resolution outptut
j) Does it support integer scaling and/or line multiplication
k) Some kind of latency indication (to be determined)
l) Confirmed aliases (rebrands)
m) Suspected aliases (rebrands)
Probably some thing missing, and probably not the optimal order, but it's a start .
Hi all !
Just got this "cheap" vga2usb capture device from Optibase. Its a clone from the Epiphan VGA2USB capture box. They work exaclty the same and contains just two chips, one is an AD9885A something.
Its a shitty thing ! look at the video, what a shame ! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjugwnBaL78
But i have a good news following 😉

Back with a good news !
Just got my second VGA to HDMI 4K Scaler, and it works fine in DOS mode, 720x400 70HZ !

This is the one from Aliexpress at $31. It seems this could be a "2019 new firmware edition", so its working fine, and it is for me the cheapest vga capture tool here 😀

That looks interesting . Can it output 70Hz ? Can it be configured for 640x400@70Hz ? Is there a manual you could share?

Hi !
No, it can't output 70 Hz, only 50 and 60.
Video modes it seems :
- 720P
- 1080P
- 4kx2K (wow) at 30 or 60hz
So basically you can't adjust the output ratio. It's always in 16:9. I used a small trick in OBS to force the 4/3 video display and recording.

The CYP SY-P293 manual is dated from 2019 and says 1024x768@70Hz is possible, so does the Startech VGA2HDMI Pro manual . The discontinued CYP CP-293 manual (2008) says it can only output 60Hz .
The CP-293N looks a lot like the Startech VGA2HDPRO2 .
Can anybody with a Startech VGA2HDMI Pro confirm whether it does indeed offer 1024x768@70Hz as an output option, as its manual indicates ?

Its the cheapest vga to hdmi scaler i found able to handle DOS mode in 70Hz, nice for cheap video capturing (despite you can capture at 70 Hz) for common usage. Its only $31. For that price, i think its nice.
Of course i do prefer my Extron, but its about $100.

Lack of 70Hz output aside, the Extron RGB-DVI 300 (and its variants) really does produce the best VGA output I have seen (short of integer scaling with OSSC) when upscaling 640x400 to 1600x1200 .
EDIT: The Extron unit can be had for 50-75 $CAN (37-55 $US) where I live, sometimes even with the PSU, and including shipping (usually from US, to Canada in my case) . So the Ali Express unit may not be such a good deal, depending on how much shipping to your location costs .
I got my extron rgb HDMI 300 for like 25$
