Quite the opposite for me because I hated the way Quake 3's weapons felt. They had no "oomph", shooting a gun in quake 3 felt like playing with a water pistol... Did not like the sounds, crosshair response, weapon handling... compared to Quake 2, Quake 3's weapons felt like toys. UT on the other hand had fantastic weapons and gunplay. I also loved the fact that characters could dodge by double tapping a directional key. Kind of a pita to master tho'.

Yes. I am also from the Netherlands and I remember a magazine review (Power Unlimited) where "Panzer General" got points deducted from the review score, because it was about a real war, and because you could also play as Germany, and overall was not proper ethics in both reviewers' opinion. Then a few years later, or maybe just one year, these "ethics" were out of the window. It was a really fast change.
I still have these magazines stored.

We can't have a discussion about the video gaming/WW2 crossover without Wolf3D.

WW2 had already had it's first stint at owning the PC gaming genre, 6 years prior to Saving Private Ryan.

I found that Goldeneye plays much better on an emulator with a dual analog controller. It really makes me wish the original N64 had dual analogs instead of the bizarro controller they did.

Never played Goldeneye but did laugh my head off at that 'real life Goldeneye' video on YT. Escort missions are horrible in every game.

It's not about who's on first but why a game existed. Private Ryan's undoubtedly a big driving force for the market in 1999-2006. Wolf3d's a quasi-reboot of an older game John Romero liked. There hasn't been much WW2 FPS games between Wolf3D and Medal of Honor, I would wonder if Schindler's List has something to do about it 🤔, being a powerful film, giving second thoughts of setting design for games out of respect for the victims and survivors.

Also on topic, I got bored of Wolf3D as soon as Doom came out. No more hitscan wallhumping mazes please 😀 I hadn't had a full Wolf3D playthrough since 1993.

Great movies are influential, no doubt.

So too are game styles. The FPS lent itself to military battle simulation, and is arguably as much of a driver of the stylistic direction.

Of course, the biggest driving force for the market - the very force which led to the creation of Wolf3D, Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, and all the rest - is that WW2 = the single most prominent and evocative event in modern history.

It doesn't have to be about the biggest war. There's been a bunch of Vietnam ground war games since Platoon and FMJ, and that petered out by 1993, leaving that setting for milsims and B-class FPS games (....and Battlefield Vietnam), but still a lot more of that than WWI, and that was a relatively recent (and shameful) war US had been in at a time.

WWI also had... Codename Eagle (BF1942 dev's previous game) and NecroVisioN (sic) and they're alternate history.

1994 was the 50th anniversary of D-Day. It was a big event. I imagine that's what got Spielberg & co. thinking about making a D-Day-themed movie.

It doesn't even have to be about war at all. Counter Strike (1999)'s quasi-military/guerilla style wasn't. Military stuff carries an inherent fascination.

BF1 was honestly the best WW1 era game i have played, and its not even really all that accurate to the actual war. People running around like its WW2. But the theme and aesthetic was point on. They tried to make it fit thematically. I know there is this other more accurate WW1 game called Verdun that people nerd out over but i could never get into it.

The real battle of Verdun mostly consisted of men being blown up (or buried alive) by artillery. The whole Western Front in that war was pretty depressing. (The East was different. Lots of movement there. Even actual cavalry battles like in the good old times of Napoleon.)

I thought Quake was a backwards step compared to doom graphics wise. Whole game kind of disappointed me (not that I had the hardware to run it at the time anyway)
I agree with Quake 3 and its lack of a "real" single player mode but it was addictive so guess they knew what they were doing.

I'm more into RTS's anyway
I really liked the C&C storyline but not really into futuristic units so every game after the first I find it hard to get into.
Same reason I never really played StarCraft.

The only other widely popular game that somewhat handles WW1 are the Wargaming ones, but these have issues of their own (and I wouldn't recommend them, they turnedout to be a huge disappointment).
But at least their models look nice.

EA focused on single player partially because it is easier to monetize and because developing bots and bot support for maps is apparently not profitable enough for them.
A real shame that BF2 and BF2142 are the last great BF games that still have an active modding community and an insane amount of 3rd party mods.

There's relatively little attention given on the WW1 eastern front.
Cavalry charges are fun actually, I really like the ones in RTW ^^

Regarding the western front, for some reason I'm imagining a kind of Quake + tower defense mix with the players handling the cannons while the horde of monsters try to charge your positions 😜

There isn't that much to add in WW1 games and such the no of them is less. EA turned that into a single player mode while going ahead with their online gaming monopoly. Of course BF2142 was the last single player BF game, and that's all EA is now.

I guess it would have been fine on my p133 but I never played it beyond the first level. My friends and I agreed, the graphics were weird.
AFAIK, they deliberately reduced the colors to "black, brown, rust and shit" due to hardware constraints.
