I am in the mist of setting up my super charged SXL2-90 system using a Symphony SL82C461 based 386 motherboard (DTK PEM-4030Y). One of the problems I ran into was the inability to use any FPU within Windows 95. I tried every 387 compatible FPU made, but when booting Windows 95 with an FPU installed, I get:
Then press any key, and get:
Then press any key, and get:
[blank screen]
This problem doesn't occur with Windows 3.11, NT 3.51, or NT 4.0. It only happens with with Windows 95. It also happens with a regular AMD 386DX installed, not just the SXL2 CPU. If I remove the FPU from the socket, Windows 95 boots and works as expected. Does anyone know what is going on and know how to work around this problem?
pshipkov was telling me that he also ran into this issue once and his solution was to use:
ULSI
DX/DLC
US83C87
...but this did not resolve my issue.
My best guess is that Windows 95 is running some FPU tests at boot time and it is failing. Or whatever file being used for the FPU test is corrupt. Replacing VMM.VXD, VMCPD.VXD didn't resolve the issue.
I swapped my HDD into a regular i486DX-100 system, and it boots fine into Windows 95. Thus, there must be some particular hardware-software combination on my DTK PEM-4030Y that is not letting Windows 95 run with an FPU on this motherboard. Any ideas for resolution are welcome.
