7500 cycles isn't enough for Quake anyway. You'll need like 60000 cycles for that to be playable at the least. /me runs around quake in dosbox at around 40fps wee protected mode games work oh and dosbox 0.63 and prior don't support protected mode games well (or not at all) so yeah don't even bother …

The Voodoo Banshee is actually great for DOS games (faster than the s3 in so many ways as well as it's got a very very solid 2D core), dunno about the Voodoo3 though.

The AWE64 also has a native OPL3 chip as well. Perhaps he's being confused with the Sound Blaster Live! (Which do indeed emulate OPL badly and slowly)?

Try benchmarking with Quake by starting it up with default everything (320x200, default viewsize with both status bars visible), in the start.bsp start position, with a timerefresh. I usually test all of my computers this way over the years (P2 233 got 56fps, k6 500 gets 73fps, p100 gets 23fps, etc …

I've had this problem on a GeforceFX card on a slow Thunderbird. Try changing the output from surface to overlay. Ugly, but works. Also another note, some of the newer Catalyst drivers actually goof up input making it lag even in unaccellerated games (even in GDI/DIB).

Try disabling GUS support in the dosbox.conf. I've had that problem too. It should fall back to Sound Blaster, which will work

Quake v1.01 isn't slow. It works fine here. Use dynamic core and auto cycles. v1.08 is the version supplied by the mission packs and 1.09 is the version of Windows/Linux ports.

You're better off with QEMU instead since it's not proprietary bloatycrap. Runs 9x fine.

I did a IPXNET game of ROTT with a friend before, worked PS. I've never gotten OMF2097 or Tyrian netplay to work on actual DOS systems at all either, so those are pretty bad examples.
